Why Bother? Alcohol -everybody’s problem? Estimated to be the 3rd highest risk factor for ill health in the EU, after tobacco and hypertension Causal relationship with > 60 medical conditions, including liver disease, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal diseases Unintentional and intentional injuries, accidents, injuries, falls Family Problems- conflict, erratic child discipline, social isolation
What are the Risks?-A Profile of Alcohol in Wales Responsible for 1000 deaths in Wales annually Only smoking and raised blood pressure are higher health risk factors Linked to over 60 disease conditions, from mouth cancers to liver disease Estimated cost to the NHS in Wales is £70-85 million annually Welsh Health Survey may only represent 50-60% of actual consumption 1 bottle of wine ‘missing’ per week for every Welsh drinker

What is an Alcohol Brief Intervention? “A short, evidence-based, structured conversation about alcohol consumption with a client to motivate and support the individual to think about and/or plan a change in their drinking behaviour in order to reduce their consumption” NHS Scotland (2009)
ABI: a Dual Function Intervention Significantly reduce the alcohol drinking levels of people who have been identified as drinking Hazardous and Harmful amounts Provide a valuable framework to facilitate referral of cases of alcohol dependence to specialised services
How much impact can ABI really have? The Numbers Needed to Treat (NNT) for Alcohol Brief Interventions = 8 The average reduction in alcohol consumption (per week) is 38 grams, which equates to 4-5 units. or or Kaner et al (2009) Effectiveness of brief alcohol interventions in primary care populations (Review) Raistrick et al (2006) Review of the effectiveness of treatment for alcohol problems
Alcohol Brief Intervention (ABI) Pathway Raise the issue or look/ listen for ‘Triggers’ Screen and give feedback Listen for readiness to change Use a suitable approach Exit strategy – remember that you or the client can stop the conversation at any time Close the conversation but keep an ‘open door’ and sign post or refer onto further support Build Confidence Motivate Coping Strategies Info and advice Menu of Options
