Safety Rules Lab Procedures Mrs. McTernan’s

Exploring and Investigating is important in science. It is FUN too! Scientists create, explore, invent, and investigate. You will be having exciting and productive laboratory experiences in your 5th grade science class. This lesson will give you important safety guidelines and classroom procedures.

Start out right Clutter Chaos - No books, jackets, or extra materials should be on your desks. Leave backpacks and any other materials over by the cubbies, windows, or in the front of the room by the board. Please do that now. NOTHING SHOULD BLOCK THE AISLES OR ANY DOOR WAY

First things First Before you begin an experiment --- review your supplies and consider any safety issues. Wait for instructions and read all directions carefully. Use materials in the manner your teacher demonstrated. If you have an idea for a new experiment, first check with your teacher.

How to be fashionable in science Caught in a bind --- Secure loose clothing, jewelry and long hair. Toe Trouble ---Wear closed toe shoes.

Who ya’ gonna call Notice where our telephone is. Know how to call nurse. Your teacher will call the nurse and will give permission to go to the nurse. Notice where the sink is. Know where the fire extinguisher is. Know the fire-evacuation route.

No food or drinks on lab days. Food for Thought No food or drinks on lab days. Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless your teacher specifically instructs you to do so.

Don’t crack up Never use glassware that is chipped, scratched or cracked. Accidents happen. In the event of an accident notify your teacher no matter how minor the accident seems to be.

Spills and Splatters Wear goggles! Immediately rinse eyes if anything gets in them. Tell your teacher Immediately rinse hands if any chemicals get on them. Tell your teacher if any chemicals spill. Once instructed - Clean spills or splatters from tables or floor.

A Neat Way to End When you have completed an experiment, clean up thoroughly. Wipe down table if necessary. Wash and dry any materials Wash your hands. Return all equipment to its proper place. Never take anything without permission.

Lab Procedures Form one, organized, quiet line outside door and wait until the last class exits before you quietly enter. On Lab Days – Nothing extra on tables – Leave Backpack to side of room. Follow all directions and Safety Rules Not Lab days – Have notebook, book, assignment pad, pencil, pen, red pen out.

One person rule Only one person is allowed out of group at a time. Only one person should be at sink and pencil sharpener at one time. Only one person should be speaking – that applies for one person in a group speaking.

Lab Report Procedures Lab Write Ups will include Title – Name of Lab Objective – Purpose of lab A Hypothesis A question Materials – List of Materials used Procedure – Step by Step Instructions Data/Observations- Charts and written observations Discussion – Explain your results. Report if you hypothesis was correct.
