First things first: Is your paper formatted correctly? 12 point font Times New Roman/Calibri/Arial (easy to read font) Double-spaced Last name and page #’s at top right corner Heading – your name Honors English 8 Social Action Research Project 16 February 2017

Circle all of your IN-TEXT citations Circle all of your IN-TEXT citations. Are they last names or article names and NOT websites? Put a star next to all of your section headers. (Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion, Works Cited) 4) Put a smiley face on your Works Cited page if it’s: -alphabetized -has hanging indents -titles of articles are in “quotations”, Titles of Websites are italicized 5) Draw a heart around your last name and page number in the upper right corner.

HIGHLIGHT IN YELLOW HIGHLIGHT IN GREEN HIGHLIGHT IN PINK PROBLEM/QUESTION STATED IN END OF 1ST INTRO PARAGRAPH HYPOTHESIS/IDEA STATEMENT AT THE END OF THE INTRODUCTION TOPIC SENTENCES AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY PARAGRAPH HIGHLIGHT IN YELLOW IN-TEXT CITATIONS HIGHLIGHT IN GREEN TRANSITION WORDS (First, Next, After, Then, Finally, etc…)

WORD CHOICE Circle all the YOU’s in the paper! MOST of them should be taken out (with exception of “hook” and possibly in the conclusion) Is the vocabulary appropriate for “professional” writing? Are there any places where it sounds too casual? VERB TENSE: You did this in the PAST, keep verbs in the PAST tense

SENTENCE FLUENCY Are the sentences clear and complete? Are there a VARIETY of sentence types? (simple, compound, complex) Do any sentences start with AND, BUT, SO, OR? CROSS OUT THOSE WORDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SENTENCE!

Works Cited Do all of your citations look like this? Author LAST NAME, Author FIRST NAME. “Title of Article”. Title of Website. Publisher/Sponsoring institution. Publishing date. Web. Date you accessed it. Ex: Sullum, Jacob. “Research Shows Heroin and Cocaine Are Less Addictive than Oreos.” Forbes. 16 Oct. 2013. Web. 17 Jan. 2017.

Now it’s time for Peer editing! Exchange your papers with someone at your table! Write C.B. and your name on their paper!

INTRODUCTION Is their hook interesting and unique? If started with a question…is it a GOOD question? Did they state the problem/question? Do they state how their facts relate back to their experiment? (SYNTHESIS) DO THEY HAVE PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS? Are they done correctly? 1st choice: Author’s Last Name 2nd choice: Title of Article – in “QUOTATIONS” 3rd choice: Website Title – in ITALICS Did they State the Hypothesis? (Is it an “I” statement?) Is it too complicated? Take some of the words out?

METHODS Topic Sentence: In order make the change I wanted to see, I needed to take action. (Highlight in PINK) Do they use transition words? (Highlight in GREEN) Do they explain WHY they did their experiment the way they did? Why was this the best way to test their experiment? TAKE OUT ALL OF THE “you’s” in this section! There should be NONE! Don’t tell ME what to do, tell me what YOU did.

Does it seem complete and correct? RESULTS Topic Sentence: My results (did/did not) support what I thought would . (Highlight in PINK) Do they use transition words to explain the trials of the experiment? (Highlight in GREEN) Does it seem complete and correct? Do they have “too much”? Do they not have enough?

CONCLUSION Does the conclusion make a statement (ANSWER THEIR QUESTION)? Does it include the following information: WHY they think it happened? (related back to the RESEARCH) What they might do differently next time to be more accurate or to have a better project? Who in the world would benefit from this research?
