The Cycle of Civilization: Egypt Learning Goal: Students will understand how the cycle of civilizations we learned about in chapter 3 apples to Egypt.

Surplus Surplus Fertile Soil + Irrigation technique: earthen walls around fields traps flood waters = Surplus

Powerful People Powerful People and families gain control and collect some of the surplus as a tax. Use this surplus to buy cloth, jewelry & luxury goods.

Job Specialization The surplus means some people are able to be artisans & merchants. (Makers & sellers of those goods) Artisans & merchants settle around the homes of the local rulers who buy their goods.

Cities This settlement led to cities. Centers of culture and power. Buildings built by architects and decorated by artisans.
