Monday 1/23 agenda: Bellwork (5 minutes) Discussion about grades/timed writes (5 minutes) Intro to Death Penalty (10-15 minutes) Pass out 1st death penalty article Your annotations for this article will also be a grade (many of you lost points on last week’s assignment…so please do this assignment thoroughly & correctly) Exit ticket (3 minutes)

Today’s bellwork: 1. What do you already know about the death penalty? 2. What are your initial thoughts about the death penalty? Are you for or against it? 3. If you are against the death penalty…..why? If you are for it....why & what crime(s) do you think deserve to be punished by death?

Circle unfamiliar words & define them somewhere on the article (front, back, or in the margins) For each of the (7) arguments: Highlight the central idea (7) Underline 2 supporting details (14) If you see pathos, mark (P), ethos (E), and logos (L) On the back of the article, write a well thought-out, complete sentence for someone supporting the death penalty (claim), and then a sentence for someone arguing against the death penalty (counterclaim). **These must be in your own words!

Exit ticket (on sticky notes): Based on some of the facts, stories, and evidence you have now seen, has your viewpoint on the death penalty changed since your bellwork assignment? Explain why it has or has not changed.
