Understanding of chemical ideas relating to acids and bases Vocab Loop

ACID

A substance which splits into ions when placed in water, producing hydrogen ions BASE

A substance which breaks up into ions when placed in water to produce hydroxide ions SULFURIC ACID

Reacts with a base to form sulfates and water H2SO4 Reacts with a base to form sulfates and water Nitric acid

Reacts with bases to form Nitrates and water HNO3 Reacts with bases to form Nitrates and water Hydrochloric acid

Reacts with bases to form Chlorides and water HCL Reacts with bases to form Chlorides and water Litmus Paper

Available in red and blue to check if a substance is an acid or a base Red in acid and blue in alkaline Indicator

Used to determine how acidic or basic a substance is ION

An atom that has lost or gained electrons and therefore has a positive or negative charge ELEMENT

A substance made out of only 1 type of atom ATOMIC NUMBER

The number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom MASS NUMBER

The number of protons and neutrons found in the nucleus of an atom

Particles with a neutral charge, that are about the same mass as a proton and found in the nucleus of an atom PROTON

Particles with a positive charge found in the nucleus of an atom electron

Particles with a negative charge found in electron shells surrounding the nucleus. They have 1/1840 mass of a proton or neutron ISOTOPE

Atoms with the same atomic number but different mass number (same number of electrons and protons, different number of neutrons) COMPOUND

A substance made up of two or more elements chemically bonded together IONIC COMPOUND

NEUTRALISATION REACTION A substance made of a positive and a negative ion held together by strong electrostatic attractions NEUTRALISATION REACTION

ACID + BASE SALT + WATER REACTANTS

The substances that are combined together in a chemical reaction, found on the left hand side of the equation PRODUCTS

What is formed in a chemical reaction – found on the right hand side of a chemical equation OH-

Hydroxide pH Scale

A scale used to indicate the levels of H+ ions using colours and numbers from 1-14 UNIVERSAL INDICATOR

A mixture of indicators used to show the acidity of a substance on the pH Scale THE END!!!
