Planners Each student will receive one free Mesa Elementary School planner. Please review it nightly, and then sign or initial below or next to the current day’s assignments. Feel free to write down any comments or concerns you may have.

Snacks/Water Bottles Daily snacks can be brought by your children to school. Snacks must be healthy. No chips (unless they are baked) or dessert foods. Please encourage your children to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during the day. No sports drinks or flavored water please.

Toys Please refrain from allowing your children to bring small toys or other objects to school that distract them from their learning.

Late/Absent Homework Policy In fifth grade, it is vitally important that students give their best effort on homework. Late homework assignments will have 10% deducted each day that it is late for the first five days from the grade that is received on it. Any paper that is received after the first five days will receive a zero. Your child will be asked to complete missing homework at recess. This does not apply to a student who has been absent. Students who are absent have two days for each day they are not at school to complete work. Any work not turned in by the revised due date will be subject to the late homework policy. **It is imperative that your child be at school every day unless they are ill. Please make any appointments after school hours if possible. Teacher instruction cannot be made up.

Spelling Spelling homework will be determined by the classroom teacher. Spelling words can be practiced on www.spellingcity.com/bcjenkins/

Reading Logs Students will be expected to read 20 minutes nightly or a total of 100 minutes each week, After reading students are required to complete reading log with a minimum of three complete sentences, This reading will also be relevant in their quarterly Accelerated Reading (AR) goal which is a part of the reading grade.

Math Facts Practice It is imperative that students have automaticity in addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts to be successful in fifth grade math.

AmeriTowne Young AmeriTowne is an award-winning educational program offered to 4th and 5th grade teachers to help teach students about business, economics and free enterprise in a fun and hands-on way.  Students will be taught classroom lessons and activities that introduce concepts such as supply and demand, job skills and work habits, banking procedures, democratic processes, civic consciousness, and career awareness. These lessons will prepare students for the culminating experience, a day in Young AmeriTowne, where students-turned-citizens apply concepts they’ve learned by working together to operate a 17-business town. This year Mesa fifth grade students will be participating in the field trip to Young AmeriTowne on November 9, 2016. The cost of the field trip is $20 per student. Wax Museum As part of our Social Studies curriculum, students will be researching an influential person from American history, writing a research paper, and portraying this person in a wax museum. The majority of the work will be completed at school except for acquiring a biography for research purposes, typing the research paper, and making a costume for the museum. Timelines and students’ characters for the project will be sent home in December.
