Texas Algebra I, Lesson 6 Instructor: Mrs. Young More on Formulas Texas Algebra I, Lesson 6 Instructor: Mrs. Young

Lesson Objectives: The student will be able to: Identify and select the appropriate formula needed to solve a problem. Identify and substitute given information into the selected formula. Solve a formula for the appropriate variable. Answer the given question.

More practice. Mary Anne is canning her own vegetables. The cans she’s using is 6 inches tall with a radius of 2inches. She has 4 cans of green beans, 6 cans of carrots, and 8 cans of tomatoes. How many feet of paper will she need to buy to put labels around all of the cans?

She has 4 cans of green beans, 6 cans of carrots, and 8 cans of tomatoes. How many feet of paper will she need to buy to put labels around all of the cans? 2 in. 6 in. Label your picture! If you’re not given one, draw one!

Work the problem… 2. Identify and select appropriate formula Substitute given data. Solve for the appropriate variable. Answer the question!

Not so obvious problems. Example: Devon likes to visit his grandmother on Sundays. He usually drives south on Gopher St. for 2 miles, then 3 miles west on Highland Avenue. Today he wants to walk the straight path through the woods that connect their homes. How much shorter a distance is the path through the woods than the route he usually drives?
