Weekly Student Success Summit Meetings

Why Weekly Student Success Summit Meetings? A way to analyze, learn from, and act upon what mentors are learning about the root causes of Chronic Absenteeism. Identify trends and patterns that suggest where strategic actions can be taken at classroom, grade and school level Provide means to integrate student support partners and community based organizations who offer more intensive supports Progress monitor the improvement of students assigned to success mentors Identify schoolwide practices to promote and encourage good attendance Troubleshoot mentor-mentee process Create paths to integrate external mentees in the fabric of the school  

MBK - Unpacking Attendance Terms AVERAGE DAILY ATTENDANCE •How many students show up to school every day? The % of enrolled students who attend school each day. It is used in some states for allocating funding. TRUANCY •Who is missing school without permission? Typically refers only to unexcused absences and is defined by each state under No Child Left Behind. It signals the potential need for legal intervention under state compulsory education laws. CHRONIC ABSENCE •Who is missing so much school they are academically at risk? Broadly means missing to much school for any reason -- excused, unexcused, etc. Researchers commonly define it as missing 10% of school Dr. Robert Balfanz Johns Hopkins University White House Presentation

Attendance Off-Track Less Than 90% On-Track Greater Than 90% Tracking Data Off-Track Less Than 90% On-Track Greater Than 90% College Ready Greater Than 95% Simply put, are they showing up? Off-Track = Missing more than 1 day every 2 weeks On-Track = No more than 1 day every 2 weeks

Student Success Summit Weekly Meetings A regular meeting let by the principal to coordinate, create, and monitor interventions for students who are exhibiting chronic absenteeism. Internal staff including nurse, social worked and mentors or their representatives attend.

Components of Successful Meetings Principal, internal staff, mentors or representatives Meeting/Facilitation Structures and Protocols Student LevelData/ Tracking Tools Schoolwide Attendance Data Please take out your notes sheets.

Agenda Principal’s Data Presentation (5 min) Look to identify schoolwide attendance and absent patterns and any schoolwide interventions Also look for any errors in data Success Mentor Report (25 min) Success mentors share any successes as well as students they may need support with to connect students/ families to additional resources Select one student for a deeper look and focus on interventions that have been tried – new interventions to try Early Warning Action – Needed Report (10 min) Identify students that are chronically absent or trending toward chronic absent Identify a champion for each Review Schoolwide Interventions (5 min)
