Integrating StatFin seamlessly into Statistics Finland’s online service How to give users access to StatFin without them noticing? Perttu Muurimäki

Year 2000 – free of charge statistical data scattered here and there In different products In an index structure sorted according to the organisation structure Finding data required advance knowledge of whether such data exist at all, which product they belong to and which Department/Unit produced them No search engine Perttu Muurimäki 07.02.08

Year 2004 – free of charge statistical data scattered In the stat.fi service in a structure sorted by topic and statistics In the StatFin database without a clear link to the stat.fi service Finding data required advance knowledge of the topic they belonged to and the platform from which they could be obtained Search engine lists results only from the stat.fi service Perttu Muurimäki 07.02.08

Year 2008 – free of charge statistical data scattered In the stat.fi service in a structure sorted by topic and statistics Search engine lists results from both the stat.fi and the StatFin service Finding data requires advance knowledge of the topic they belong to Perttu Muurimäki 07.02.08

Concilience The word consilience was apparently coined by William Whewell, in The Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences, 1840. In this synthesis Whewell explained that, “The Consilience of Inductions takes place when an Induction, obtained from one class of facts, coincides with an Induction obtained from another different class. Thus Consilience is a test of the truth of the Theory in which it occurs.“ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consilience) Perttu Muurimäki 07.02.08
