Security and Shelter The physical and mental wellbeing of the student while in your classroom. Physical security is a precondition of meeting the other higher needs of a child. Teacher’s should be striving to make the classroom a safe and comfortable environment to help facilitate learning. Ways we can do this is create soft spots and minimize distraction as much as possible. (L) A soft rug for students to go to do independent work or read. (R) The buildings floor plan as well as the best emergency exit route from the class.

Social Contact The arrangement of the classroom to facilitate differing amounts of interaction between students themselves and students and teachers. Desks grouped in clusters to facilitate group work

Symbolic Identification The personalization of the classroom. Doing so makes the environment more inclusive for the students. Student artwork or collaborative posters are an easy way to show ownership in the classroom. Student projects being displayed

Task Instrumentality The physical design of the classroom and the tools needed to help the classroom function and the students accomplish activities/assignments assigned with ease. (L) A supply table that students have access to when working on assignments in class. (R) Classroom jobs that can be rotated every week.

Pleasure The things in the classroom that are visually appealing and that students find enjoyable. An encouraging and supportive poster while also teaching them to be kind and good people.

Growth Things around the classroom that promotes cognitive and academic development. A stimulating environment that students can use to explore and discover. (L) For students who have specific interests there are bins all over the classroom with resources for how they can learn more. (R) A chart that displays different genres each group is supposed to be reading during literature circles
