Nell Bang-Jensen is a teacher and theater artist living in Philadelphia, PA. Her passion for arts education has led her to a variety of roles including developing curriculum for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and teaching at numerous theaters and schools around the city. She works with playwrights from ages four to ninety on developing new work and is especially interested in alternative literacies and theater for social change. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she currently works in the Artistic Department of the Wilma Theater and, in addition to teaching, is a freelance actor and dramaturg. Most astronauts find their freedom from gravity exhilarating, especially as they adapt to their new environment. But weightlessness enormously complicates the business of daily life, from eating to sleeping. And space adaptation involves some very complex changes in the human body, both short-term and long-term. These changes can cause health problems both in space and on return to Earth. There are other factors, too. Outside the protective shield of the Earth's atmosphere, astronauts have to contend with high radiation levels. Mostly, these have minor and long-term effects: a slight increase in the risk of cancer in later life, for example. First, newcomers who want to qualify as astronauts have to pass a one-year course of basic training. The candidates learn about space technology and science, basic medical skills, and how the International Space Station (ISS) works. They also become familiar with scuba diving. After this first part, they go on to another year of advanced training. They learn in more detail about the various parts of the ISS, the experiments and the transport vehicles, and the involvement of ground control. They can then be assigned to a mission. I asked your question about what an astronaut wears to my friend, Ron. He said: Under the orange launch and entry suits we wear a pair of long johns. Since you are likely to be in the suit for several hours and since you can't open it up in any way to "go," we also wear a diaper for adults! As soon as we reach orbit we remove the suits and put on regular clothes for the duration of the mission (no diapers!). The suits are put back on just before deorbit. The EVA suits are the same with an added cooling garment that goes on over the long johns. It is like another pair of long johns with small plastic tubing woven all through it. The difference is that when you eat in zero gravity, the food — liquids and solids, even crumbs — can float away. But scientists have come up with ways to package it so that the food ends up in the astronaut’s stomach and not on the ceiling of the spacecraft. Technology has advanced since the early days of space flight. Today, astronauts can make their own menu from a variety of foods and drinks. All the astronauts need is water and an oven. Before the flight, astronauts get to choose what food they will take with them. The astronauts taste different things and give them a score. The highest rated foods get on the menu, though a dietician has the final say on the menu. The food has to be nutritious with enough vitamins and minerals.
