Luke: An Eyewitness Account #51 LUKE, AUGUST 31, 2016 LUKE Luke: An Eyewitness Account August 31, 2016 Wednesday Bible Study

LUKE Luke 21:20-37 NKJV

LUKE Jesus continues His prophetic teaching as He turns to the soon destruction of the _______(1) and attack on the City of Jerusalem. Temple

LUKE Luke 21:20-24 NKJV 20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.

LUKE 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her.

LUKE 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

LUKE 23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people.

LUKE 24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

LUKE The only _____(2) the people of Israel will need concerning the destruction of their beloved city is the appearance of ________(3) surrounding Jerusalem. sign soldiers

LUKE To escape death, Jesus recommends that the people literally “run for the hills.” City dwellers should leave and those who are in country should stow away.

LUKE There is no promise of ____________(4) in Christ’s words. This will be according to God’s plans and will fulfill prophecy (20:22). deliverance

LUKE While this destruction will occur just a generation after Jesus speaks (70 A.D.), this scenario will occur again at a future date.

LUKE The key that is may be a prophecy with _____(5) applications is found in verse 24. dual

LUKE The phrase “until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” I believe this refers to the 490 years of God’s timetable concerning the time of Jewish repentance. This prophecy was revealed to _______(6). Daniel

LUKE Daniel 9:26-27 NKJV 26 “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;

LUKE And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

LUKE 27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.

LUKE And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.”

LUKE This prophecy of 70 weeks is key to understanding prophecy and is a major consideration in ______________(7) eschatology. pre-millennial

LUKE Luke 21:25-28 NKJV 25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring;

LUKE 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

LUKE 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

LUKE These words must have left both eyes and mouths wide open as Jesus describes the events that accompany __________(8). Many attempts have been made to define each of these signs in detail. His return

LUKE I believe the safest approach, without risking leaning too much on our own wisdom, is to see this prophecy in light of the _____________(9) and all the horror associated with war. world at war

LUKE Rev. 16:17-18 NKJV 17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, “It is done!”

LUKE 18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.

LUKE The phrase “then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory” signifies this is not His return for His church as defined in I Thes. 4.

LUKE That return will be for the “dead in Christ” (v16) and “those who are alive and remain” (v17). The passage in our text is for “they” who will see the Son of Man.

LUKE These are not those who are His but are those who have continued to ______(10) Him. This Second Coming of Christ will be the culmination of the _________(11) weeks prophecy. reject seventy

LUKE The final 7 years are completed and their redemption draws near. This return is not for the church because we will return with Him following the wedding feast. (Rev. 19:14)

LUKE Luke 21:29-33 NKJV 29 Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.

LUKE 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.

LUKE 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place.  33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

LUKE Once again Jesus uses a word picture to teach His disciples. This time He points to a fig tree as it represents “all trees.” (v27) Jesus declares that things that He just described will occur in one generation.

LUKE I have been guilty of letting others determine what this passage means rather than letting the Word speak for itself.

LUKE Bible teachers have attempted to assign the budding of leaves on the fig tree with the re-birth of Israel in 1948, saying then that the Lord will return within one generation of that event.

LUKE One generation was considered _____(12) years. However, when the Lord did not return in 1988, then other lengths were determined to be a generation. 40

LUKE However, the simplest and most ______(13) in interpretation of this text is the same generation that experiences the atrocities of that last great war will also witness the return of the Son of Man. direct

LUKE Luke 21:34-37 NKJV 34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.

LUKE 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

LUKE 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

LUKE 37 And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet.

LUKE Jesus ends His teaching on prophecy with a ______(14) warning. They are not to be caught up so much in the ______(15) of this world that they don’t prepare for His return. sober cares

LUKE His Second Coming will be like a _______(16) to those who swell on the earth. This refers to those who give no thought to heaven or things of the Spirit. snare

LUKE These people are so concerned with the ___________(17) that they will be trapped by ________(18). temporary eternity

LUKE Luke closes this section with a synopsis of Jesus’ daily activity during the last week before His __________(19). crucifixion

LUKE He probably rested at the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus in Bethany. Their home was in Bethany which is just east of the Mount of Olives.

LUKE It could mean that Jesus needed to be in Jerusalem so ______(20) each day that He actually slept beneath the olive tree branches where He would soon be taken _______(21) by soldiers led by Judas Iscariot. early captive

LUKE Luke’s use of “all the people came to Him” indicates that His _________(22) is widespread popularity

LUKE and is increasingly a threat to the religious leaders who were now feeling ___________(23) by Jesus in Jerusalem. threatened

LUKE
