Carbohydrates!

Starches and sugars found in food Provide heat, energy, and fiber for digestion 55%-65% of your diet 150-160 grams/day 4 calories = 1 gram 2 Types Simple: only one sugar (glucose)(milk, fruits, veggies) Complex: 3 or more simple sugars/starches (rice, grains, seeds, nuts)(low in fat)(high in fiber, minerals, and protein)

Fats!

Most concentrated form of energy (more than carbs and protein) Provides warmth and temperature regulation, transportation of vitamins, protects organs Most concentrated form of energy (more than carbs and protein) Carries vitamins A, D, E, and K Does not dissolve in water 9 calories = 1 gram. 66-84 grams/day 2 types Saturated: solid or semi solid at room temperature (unhealthy) (animal fats, tropical oils, beef, pork, dairy) Unsaturated: liquid at room temperature (healthy) (vegetable oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil) Trans Fat: when a hydrogen is added through a heating process (unhealthy) (margarine, shortening, baked goods)

Minerals!

Inorganic substances that the body cannot produce. Regulates many vital body processes. Absorbed from the ground through food Happens when we eat plants and animals 14 are needed on a daily basis Each mineral has a different required amount/day in “mg” Sodium = 500mg Iron = 15mg Calcium = 1200mg

Vitamins!

Compounds that help regulate and maintain vital body processes All are needed in small amounts Vitamins do NOT supply calories 13 essential vitamins Vitamin D is produced by the body 2 types: Water-soluble: dissolves in water Gets into bloodstream faster Excess are excreted through urine Replenished regularly Fat-soluble: absorbed and transported by fat A,D,E, and K All are stored in body fat, liver, and kidneys Excess can be toxic

Protein!

Builds and repairs body tissue (muscle, bone, teeth, skin) 20 different amino acids Body makes all of them except for 9 9 are the essential amino acids that come from food 4 calories/gram 45-57 grams/day Complete Proteins: foods that contain essential amino acids Fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, soybeans Incomplete Proteins: foods that are missing essential amino acids Seeds, nuts, and grains

Water!

Carries nutrients to and from cells in the body and regulates body functions Cushions areas of your body (joints, spinal cord, brain) Hydrates Temperature regulation 7-11 cups daily Makes up 70-80% of our bodies Fruits and veggies have more water than meats and cheeses
