Western and Eastern Front

Causes for U.S. involvement Sinking of the Lusitania: a British ship that sailed from Great Britain to New York…this ship was sunk by Germany. In the ship were close to 200 American civilians. This upset the U.S. government because at the time the U.S. was neutral. Zimmerman Note (telegram): a telegram sent from Germany to Mexico inviting Mexico to join Germany…if the Central Powers would win, Germany promised to get Texas, New Mexico and Arizona back to Mexico.

Lusitania The Lusitania: British Liner sunk by U2 submarine from Germany

Woodrow Wilson

During the War of 1812, Samuel Wilson was a businessman from Troy, NY that supplied the U.S. Army with beef in barrels. The barrels were labeled "U.S." When asked what the initials stood for, one of Wilson's workers said it stood for Uncle Sam Wilson. The suggestion that the meat shipments came from "Uncle Sam" led to the idea that Uncle Sam symbolized the Federal Government and association stuck. In 1961, Congress passed a resolution that recognized Samuel Wilson as the inspiration for the symbol Uncle Sam.

Lenin: Russian Revolution…He was the founder of Communism in Russia…led Bolshevik Revolution

Treaty of Versailles ended WWI Palace of Versailles: Paris Peace Treaty was signed that ended WWI

Treaty of Versailles: 1919 Placed all blame on Germany Severely punished Germany (had to pay billions in war reparations) Germany forced to de-militarize completely Germany was humiliated worldwide Hitler (a soldier during this war) vows to take revenge… Unfortunately…no country “checked up” on Germany on these sanctions..

League of Nations Woodrow Wilson firmly believed in this international organization however he did not receive support from Congress to join the league….the league failed and thus twenty years later the world was to see a second world war.
