Prelude for Worship Martha Short Kim Roudebush
Welcome Daniel Palmer
Higher Ground CCLI #606984
I’m pressing on the upward way New heights I’m gaining every day Still praying as I onward bound “Lord, plant my feet On higher ground”
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground
My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise And fears dismay Though some may dwell Where these abound My prayer My aim is higher ground
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground
I want to live above the world Though Satan’s darts At me are hurled For faith has caught The joyful sound The song of saints On higher ground
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground
I want to scale the utmost height And catch a gleam of glory bright But still I ‘ll pray Till heaven I’ve found “Lord, lead me on To higher ground”
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground CCLI #606984

He leadeth me O blessed thought Whate'er I do Where-e'er I be O words with heavenly Comfort fraught Whate'er I do Where-e'er I be Still 'tis God's hand That leadeth me
He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me
Sometimes 'mid scenes Of Deepest gloom Sometimes where Eden's Bowers bloom By waters still O'er troubled sea Still 'tis His hand that leadeth me
He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me
And when my task On earth is done When by Thy grace The vict'ry's won E'en death's cold wave I will not flee Since God through Jordan leadeth me
He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me © Public Domain Joseph H. Gilmore / William B. Bradbury CCLI #606984

By Faith Habakkuk
The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet saw The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet saw. 2How long, O Lord, will I call for help, And You will not hear? I cry out to You, “Violence!” Yet You do not save. 3Why do You make me see iniquity, And cause me to look on wickedness? Yes, destruction and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises.
4 Therefore the law is ignored And justice is never upheld 4 Therefore the law is ignored And justice is never upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore justice comes out perverted. 5 “Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days— You would not believe if you were told.
Summary of vv. 6 –10, the Chaldeans (Babylonians) will overtake you. 11 “Then they will sweep through like the wind and pass on. But they will be held guilty, They whose strength is their god.”
12Are You not from everlasting, O Lord, my God, my Holy One 12Are You not from everlasting, O Lord, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O Lord, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct. [But they are ruthless and unrelenting, catching men like fish (vv. 13–16)].17Will they therefore empty their net And continually slay nations without sparing?
2:2Then the Lord answered me and said, “Record the vision And inscribe it on tablets, That the one who reads it may run. 3“For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay. 4 “Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him; But the righteous will live by his faith.
2:6–20 is a song of woes in 5 parts in which God confirms that He sees and will address the sins of His enemies. In ch. 3, Habakkuk prays for the Day of the Lord in which the Lord is shown to be glorious as at Sinai and powerful and avenging as in the Exodus. In wrath, the Lord remembers mercy (v. 2), for when He tramples the nations, He saves His people (13).
16 I heard and my inward parts trembled, At the sound my lips quivered 16 I heard and my inward parts trembled, At the sound my lips quivered. Decay enters my bones, And in my place I tremble. Because I must wait quietly for the day of distress, For the people to arise who will invade us.
17 Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
19The Lord God is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments.
To exercise faith in God
1) We must be real with Him (ch. 1).
The Christian response to suffering is not denial, mental gymnastics, meditation or any other man-made cover up -- it is lament. It is to say to God: “This hurts. I don't like it. I need You.”
2) We must rest in God's sovereign control when our circumstances seem to undermine His character (1:11-12; ch. 2).
The guilty will be found guilty. (1:11).
The guilty will be found guilty. (1:11). The people of God will not die (1:12).
The guilty will be found guilty. (1:11). The people of God will not die (1:12). Our Sovereign God has appointed a time (2:3).
3) We must see adversity as the proving ground for faith (2:4; 3:16–17)
If everyone who trusted in Jesus immediately received $10M, a beach house, $100,000/year and a perfect family, the whole world would trust in Jesus.
Or would they?
Faith is proven in the hard times.
Faith is a firm attachment to God, an undisturbed confidence in the divine promises of His grace.
Pride is satisfied only when we have things seemingly under control Pride is satisfied only when we have things seemingly under control. Faith trusts God through affliction.
Habukkuk's questioning leads him not to further despair but to deeper faith.
4) We must rejoice in the God of our salvation (3:17-19).
"Although trembling on account of the approaching trouble, the prophet will nevertheless exult in the salvation that he foresees" (K-D, 114).
"God is the inexhaustible source and infinite sphere of joy "God is the inexhaustible source and infinite sphere of joy." (K-D, 115).

Blessed Be Your Name CCLI #606984 © 2002 Thankyou Music (Admin. by EMI Christian Music Publishing) Beth Redman / Matt Redman CCLI #606984
In the land that is plentiful Blessed be Your name In the land that is plentiful Where Your streams Of abundance flow
Through the wilderness Blessed be Your name When I'm found In the desert place Though I walk Through the wilderness
Every blessing You pour out And when the darkness Closes in Lord I'll turn back to praise And when the darkness Closes in Lord Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name Blessed be Your name Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be Your name When the sun's Shining down on me When the world's All as it should be
Blessed be Your name On the road Marked with suffering Though there's pain In the offering
Every blessing You pour out And when the darkness closes in Lord I'll turn back to praise And when the darkness closes in Lord Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name Blessed be Your name Blessed be Your glorious name
My heart will choose to say, Lord You give and take away My heart will choose to say, Lord Blessed be Your name
Whom Shall I Fear
Though darkness fills the night It cannot hide the light You hear me when I call You are my morning song Though darkness fills the night It cannot hide the light Whom shall I fear
You are my sword and shield Though troubles linger still You crush the enemy Underneath my feet You are my sword and shield Though troubles linger still Whom shall I fear
I know Who goes before me I know Who stands behind The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever He is a friend of mine The God of angel armies is always by my side
My strength is in Your name For You alone can save You will deliver me Yours is the victory Whom shall I fear (Whom shall I fear)
I know Who goes before me I know Who stands behind The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever He is a friend of mine The God of angel armies is always by my side
I'm holding on to Your promises (And) nothing formed Against me shall stand You hold the whole World in Your hands I'm holding on to Your promises You are faithful
I know Who goes before me I know Who stands behind The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever He is a friend of mine The God of angel armies is always by my side

Bowing here I find my rest And without You I fall apart Lord I come - I confess Bowing here I find my rest And without You I fall apart You're the one that guides my heart
My one defense my righteousness Lord I need You – oh, I need You Every hour I need You My one defense my righteousness Oh God how I need You
Where grace is found is where You are And where You are Lord I am free Where sin runs deep Your grace is more Where grace is found is where You are And where You are Lord I am free Holiness is Christ in me Where You are Lord I am free
So teach my song to rise to You When temptation comes my way And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You Jesus You're my hope and stay
