Aim: Topographic Maps Do Now:
Topographic Maps specialized maps which show the highs and lows (relief) of the Earth’s surface.
Reading Contour Lines “The Basics”.
Topographic Maps A Topographic map, or contour map is used to show the shape of the Earth’s surface. Elevation is the height above or below sea level.

Topographic Map Notes FIELD- Area where a value is measured. ISOLINES- a line connecting points of equal value.
Where is this? The cell.
Contour Lines.
Contour Maps AKA Topographic Maps. Contour Map: (topograpic map) shows elevation of various points on the Earth’s surface.
Aim: How do we read Topographic Maps? Do Now: In your notes, list all the different types of landforms/features of Earth that you can think of. Example:
After UNIT VII you should be able to:  Interpret major topographical features such as hills, river valleys, and depressions  Accurately draw contour.
Measuring Earth. Do Now Think of a way to organize the numbers on your table.
Isolines: contour lines on an elevation map Isotherms: contour lines on a temperature map Isobars: contour lines on an air pressure.
AIM: How do we make profiles? Do now: -Take the worksheet from the back TOP bin. Take out a piece of scrap paper and make sure you have a pencil for today’s.

Topographic Maps. Gradient The rate of change from place to place within the field is called the gradient. It is also called the ____________________.

Intervals 20 meters 10 meters Interval- the difference in value between any two adjacent isolines

Notice the “different” lines – Called Hachure lines Depressions and Hills Hills Depressions Notice the “different” lines – Called Hachure lines

Isolines that are close together show a greater gradient Use the formula to solve for gradient To calculate the gradient between points Y and Z, determine their values then use a scrap piece of paper to determine the distance between the points Isolines that are close together show a greater gradient 520 ft 490 ft Gradient = 6 ft/mi Distance = 5 miles

Rivers Rivers always flow downhill. Contour lines will always bend upstream. The river flows in the opposite direction that the contours point.

Profiles Step 1: Get a scrap piece of paper 10 20 20 10 10 20 30 40 40 30 20 Step 1: Get a scrap piece of paper Step 2: Line it up under the line X-Y Step 3: Draw “tick marks” for each instance that a contour crosses the line X-Y Step 4: Label each “tick” with its appropriate value

Step 5: Align your scrap paper with the profile as shown above. 10 20 30 40 Step 5: Align your scrap paper with the profile as shown above. Step 6: Place a dot on the graph for each of your “ticks” at the indicated elevation. Step 7: Connect the dots with a smooth curving line.
