Hokkaido(北海道)

Hokkaido Hokkaido(北海道) is an island at Japan's northern extremity, surrounded by sea in all directions. It is an extensive land, accounting for 22% of Japan's total land area.

Sapporo札幌 Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido,is Japan's fifth largest city.But it is also one of the nation's youngest major cities. In 1857, the city's population stood at just seven people. Today, the city is well-known for its Clock Tower, Chocolate Factory , and the annual snow festival held in February.

The Clock Tower（札幌钟楼） Sapporo札幌 The Clock Tower is a symbol of Sapporo. It has been marking time for over a century. It has become one of Sapporo's most famous tourist attractions. The building was constructed in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College.In 1881 a clock purchased from Boston was installed.

Sapporo札幌 Today, the Clock Tower serves as a museum with displays about the history of the building and Sapporo on the first floor. On the second floor are displays about the clock and a spacious ceremony hall that calls to mind the simple buildings of the colonial American Midwest.

Sapporo札幌 Shiroi Koibito Park(白色恋人巧克力公园) is a theme park by Ishiya（石屋制果株式会社） , a local chocolate company. The company‘s flagship product is the Shiroi Koibito cookie（白色恋人巧克力）. It is one of the most famous souvenirs from Hokkaido.

The Sapporo Snow Festival （札幌雪雕节） The Sapporo Snow Festival ,held during one week every February in Sapporo , attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. It is one of Japan's most popular winter events.

Sapporo札幌 The Sapporo Snow Festival was started in 1950, when high school students built a few snow statues in Odori Park（大通公园）. It has since developed into a large, commercialized event, featuring spectacular snow and ice sculptures(雕塑).

Otaru小樽 The canal makes for a pleasant stroll during the day, when artists present their works to passing tourists, and during the evenings when old fashioned gas lamps are lit and provide a romantic atmosphere.
