U6: Critical Approaches to Creative Media Products JIM DOHERTY FINN BALDRAN

Task & research methods Apply three audience research methods to a newspaper, magazine, film or TV show. Quantitative audience research, qualitative audience research & audience classification

Fight Club

Case Study The film I have chosen is the American block buster film Fight Club. It was directed by David Fincher, and was based of the same named book by Chuck Palahniuk. It starred Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter. It is known for its surrealism and violent content. I’ll be using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research as well as audience classification, in order to identify Fight Club’s audience, as well as the components that effected its performance among viewers.

Box Office Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $37,030,102   36.7 %+ Foreign: $63,823,651   63. 3%= Worldwide: $100,853,753  Domestic Summary Opening Weekend: $11,035,4 85(#1 rank, 1,963 theaters, $5,621 average)% of Total Gross: 29. 8%> View All 14 WeekendsWidest Release: 1, 966 theaters Fight Club opened commercially in the United States and Canada on October 15, 1999 and earned US$11,035,485 in 1,963 theaters over the opening weekend. The film ranked first at the weekend box office. For the American theatrical release, the studio hired the National Research Group to test screen the film; the group predicted the film would gross between US$13 million and US$15 million in its opening weekend.

Ratings & reviews The film has very positive reviews and even started a cult following. It has very good critic reviews and is revered as a cinema classic. It was also called many times in different medias as one of the director David Fincher, finest movies he ever made with Seven.

Home video sales At first when the VHS was out, it did poorly and the ratings are not even available. But when on it’s rerelease on DVD, it grossed over 34 million copies in 2 months, which was huge for it’s time.

Audience Classification The movie is rated 18 or plus because of its violent content. It’s mostly directed to a male audience but can be viewed to a large audience, mostly David Fincher fans and cinema enthusiast. I would categorize this movie as an drama film/action thriller.
