College Admissions/Deadlines “What are the different admission deadlines?” Early Decision (ED) – Binding – you are committing to attend if accepted Early Notifications (EA) – Non Binding – you can submit to multiple colleges Regular Notification/Action – Non Binding Application and fees must be received by stated deadlines. Most college have a grace period regarding the receipt of transcripts, recommendation letters and test scores. See handout for Colleges and Universities deadlines in North Carolina.
Research and Selecting Colleges Research each college by going to the University Website (Freshman Profile). Know what the SAT, ACT, GPA needed to attend the college. Visit the college. Attend College Fairs and Fall Open Houses. The average student applies to 5-7 schools. 2 Safety, 3 Match, 2 Reach Things you may wish to consider: In state vs out of state tuition What activities and clubs are available Housing options Types of financial aid available
College Application Process Student Be organized Application Deadline is Priority!! Essays (have teachers proof read) see handout Application Fees (waivers available for students who have free and reduced lunch) Talk to your Teacher about a Recommendation letter (Request through Naviance) Request Transcript (through Naviance) Give Secondary School forms to your counselor (if applicable) APPLY!!!!
College Application Supplements Resume – Extracurricular Activities and Experiences Essays – Interviews on Paper Recommendation Letters (request through Naviance) Art Portfolios, Music Recording (specific schools/programs) SAT or ACT scores
College Entrance Exams ACT and/or SAT Both the SAT and ACT are Entrance Exams to colleges/universities. You can choose which exam you want to take and send to colleges. (Send the one you score the best on). If you are uncertain which one to take, please refer to the colleges you are applying to see if they prefer one over the other. You register online for the ACT or SAT exams. If you recieve free or reduced lunch, please see your counselor for a fee waiver.

College Application Process Teacher Ask the teacher whether they will be willing to recommend you. Reintroduce yourself to teachers, share with them memorable moments/accomplishments from their class. Make sure you have completed your brag sheet. Once the teacher agrees to write a recommendation letter for you… Go to Naviance and submit the request ******Give your teacher at least 3-4 weeks before the deadline*******
Types of Applications Common Application – “Common App” www.commonapp.org Includes over 500 schools nationwide Complete 1 application for multiple colleges College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) www.CFNC.org Apply only to NC Colleges and Universities Other planning tools (College profiles, financial aid) You will still need to request a transcript through Naviance. College or University Website
Scholarships and Money Scholarships will be posted in Naviance.
