Landforms Africa is a vast landform with a broad variety of physical features. 9.5 million sq miles Bordered by the Red Sea; Atlantic and Indian ocean.

Plateaus, Highlands, and Mountains Africa is home to vast Plateaus. Rising up to 8,000 ft plateaus make up much of Africa’s landscape. These plateaus make up some very striking landscapes. With in these plateaus are Escarpments and Cataracts.

Plateaus, Highlands, and Mountains Escarpments are steep jagged slopes or cliffs Generally located within 20 mi of the coast. Cataracts within the escarpments create unmatched scenic beauty. Rivers flow over the cataracts to create towering waterfalls. What part of Africa are most of the Escarpments and cataracts in?

The Great Rift Valley An amazing natural wonder, Africa’s Great Rift Valley runs along the eastern coast of the continent.

The Great Rift Valley Part of this Rift valley is Mount Kilimanjaro. One of Africa’s highest peaks. Also one of the most recognizable features in Africa.

Water Systems The people of Africa are very dependent on natural water resources. A small percentage have access to running water. Most people are located close to lakes and rivers.

Water Systems Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. Second largest freshwater lake in the world. Is the source of the White Nile River.

Water Systems While Africa has many rivers, the Niger River stands out. Name means “Great River” 2,600 miles long. A vital source of water and transportation. Niger river splits into a vast Delta. The delta region is a very fertile area for farming.

Water Systems The Zambezi river flows through south central Africa. Provides vital water source. Creates one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Africa. Drops 355 ft Water flows at 35,400 ft/sec

Natural Resources Africa, as a region, is a wealth of natural resources. Nigeria is member of OPEC. South Africa has half of the world’s supply of gold. Diamonds are mined in abundance in Angola, DRC, and Sierra Leone.
