Outstanding Committements Outstanding contributions from the CAST Institutes: See Tables A1,A2 50 kCHF (1.6%) Dominated by 43 kCHF from Greece. Cast understands that one half will be paid soon CERN contribution to magnet operation (1265 kCHF): Summary of magnet operation costs (see Table A3) 987 kCHF used by end of 2004 Remainder used for the shorter program in 2005

Ambitious program for 2005 largely completed Table:7 Time profile of Phase II Common Fund Budget T297400 up to 31.10.05 Balance of Common Fund 44.5 kCHF (on 31.10.05) Ambitious program for 2005 largely completed ~ 30kCHF upgrades to cryostat vacuum pumping and monitoring ~ 50kCHF 4He gas system and temperature monitoring ~ 20kCHF on cold window development SACLAY, FREIBURG, CERN ‘in kind’ contributions

2005 program Modifications to magnet movement system and ‘Potence’ Detailed checking of magnet tracking behaviour Installation of a new vacuum system Preparation of a provisional 4He gas system Opening of the magnet cryostat Install cold windows and additional instrumentation Cool down and 4He test filling of magnet cold bore Quench tests Commission gas system First low-pressure 4He data taking runs (Second half 2005 – final design and ordering of Phase II gas system) 2 openings of cryostat: Install solid windows for quench tests Install x-ray windows for data taking

Magnet movement modifications Magnet movement upgrade 100kCHF project money from PH (60:40 design:mechanics) Magnet movement upgrade (pivot and chariot) Improvement of pointing accuracy Strengthen vertical pivot- remove sag dependent on load Magnet cable support arm ‘potence’ Reroute magnet power cables onto magnet via a new support structure above the centre of rotation remove any possibility of collision magnet vs cable arm Remove shifters task of surveillance Design study well advanced But progress stopped by LHC overload of TS-MME 40kCHF spent on design No likelihood in near future to be completed and installed Must nevertheless complete the study and make the drawings Insurance in case of future problems in the movement system. Reserve 20kCHF Present magnet movement system? Has foibles but are well understood and reproducible Pointing accuracy is good enough for telescopes (< 2.7 mm/10m) Introducing more reference position checking and angle encoder monitoring Must minimise the extra loading of magnet from Phase II gas system Remaining 40kCHF Reserve in case of problems or divert to 3He gas system

Draft Budget Request 2006 2006 will be a very intensive year for CAST Program for 2006 (next slide) Draft operating budget must take into account Subsistence/support for key personnel, including doctoral student working on final 3He gas system Fees for external survey team Maintenance of experiment (phones, rentals, infrastructure, repairs) Basic running costs ( gas, EPool) Mechanical support (mechanic for small modifications in SR8, workshops) Estimate is 149 kCHF

2006 program Rapid start up after the Xmas to collect a further 15 days data Shutdown of CAST for >3 weeks for an LHC-dictated infrastructure maintenance stoppage. Profit to replace a gate valve for later installation of the new Micromegas (MM) line. Then cool down at end of shutdown. Laser and x-ray alignment of both CCD and (new) MM telescopes. Data taking between ~ 2.5 and 14 mbar 4He gas filling ~ 140 pressure settings starting late in April 2006 for 5 - 6 months. After completion of the design study and a technical review early in 2006 Order components for the 3He system Install and commission 4Q06 Autumn shutdown. Warm magnet. Install modifications inside cryostat (cold pressure probes, cryogenic valves and quench protection check valves and final cold windows for high pressure running). The CAST experiment will prepare for a full years data taking starting as soon as possible in 2007 in order to cover between 14 and 60 mbar 3He.

Schedule to May 06

Draft Budget Request 2006 Draft operating budget must take into account Subsistence/support for key personnel, including doctoral student working on final 3He gas system Fees for external survey team Maintenance of experiment (phones, rentals, infrastructure, repairs) Basic running costs ( gas, EPool) Mechanical support (mechanic for small modifications in SR8, workshops) Estimate is 149 kCHF To fund 2006 running costs Requires contributions of 3.3 kCHF /PhD (46) Table 8: Draft operating budget 2006

Overall financial situation and future outlook Operating budget 2005 until 31.12.05 Expect to spend until 31.12.05 39 kCHF Common Fund Balance 31.10.05 44.5 kCHF CAST requires new contributions for the start of 2006 2005 cash contributions already in pipeline 60 kCHF (Saclay,UBC, Zaragoza) Institutes waiting to order/provide instruments 20 kCHF (Demokritos,MPI, LLNL) Some remaining 2005 contributions require addendum to MOU Others need a request for funds from CERN (next week) 2006 expenditure 6 months data taking with present systems starting late April 06 Running costs request ~ 3.2kCHF /PhD Orders and construction of 3He system 3He project Interventions on magnet both inside and outside magnet cryostat Estimate of costs Estimate of income over 2006 & 2007

Table 4A: Present cost estimate for the 3He Project

3He Project 3He  Free 3He gas system  207kCHF 1m3 covered by LLNL (saving ~500kCHF) Also LLNL will cover insurance & transport in lieu of running costs contributions 2006 & 2007 3He gas system  207kCHF Builds on existing 4He instrumentation Hermetic components Passive security to limit pressure near cold windows in a quench to 1 bar (3He pressure 120mbar 1.8K) 3He related upgrades  115 - 138 kCHF Vacuum system (3He interlocks) Final cold windows Electricity upgrade Support for additional personnel for system operation Small CAST upgrades Option  50kCHF PLC- automation of 3He pressure-step filling system See following summary Table 10

Estimate of CAST funding 2006 & 2007 The contributions proposed by collaborating institutes Combining both ‘committed ‘ and ‘highly-likely’ categories Shown in Table 11 below

3He project Costs vs Funding Total costs 2006 & 2007 (incl. running costs) 614 kCHF to 687 kCHF Funding (kCHF) Sum % Min/Max Committed 432 432 70 / 63 % Highly-likely (to be confirmed ) 112 544 89 / 79 % Possible Greece Phase II contribution 60 604 98 / 89 % CAST can already fund ~ 85% Collaboration positive to support 3He project MOU addendum to be prepared for this shortly Shortfall ~ 100kCHF Institutes working to apply for funding from new sources to cover shortfall ~ 100kCHF Contributions All Institutes strongly encouraged to send remaining 2005 and all 2006

Future outlook The 3He project of CAST Beyond 3He  Phase III ? Enable running to 60 mbar at 1.8K (axion rest mass up to 0.8 eV/c2) Phase II Physical limit for 3He 120mbar at 1.8K Axion rest mass up to 1.16 eV/c2 60  120mbar will require at least one more year (2008+) 3He strongly absorbs X-rays over an average path of 5m in cold bore CAST sensitivity reduced but vital region to explore either by discrete steeping or pressure ramping Beyond 3He  Phase III ? H2 H2 running (cold gas cell in at least 1 beam pipe, much better x-ray T%) Axion mass reach  1.5 eV/c2 Development of gas cell(s) and Si detectors for cell windows (30ºK) Visible – UV photons
