New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies Add to NFNP notes

Vocabulary Congregation – a group of people who belong to the same church Subsistence farming – grow only enough for yourself

Result of Roanoke blunder After the failure of Roanoke, England focused their efforts North Jamestown and Virginia grew populated with tobacco plantations “Fringe” colonists such as hunters, trappers, etc. began to spread South in 1655

Albemarle No direct migration from England to North Carolina Strictly inter colony migration Albemarle settlement comprised of substance farmers Historians call Albemarle first “truly American” settlement

New England Colonies John Winthrop, a governor from England, established the puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony Successful due to preparedness and harbor Massachusetts Bay Colony absorbed Plymouth and became Massachusetts

The way of New England Puritans believed in hard work and community Congregations set up their own towns with the church as the “center” Preach about the “New England Way” Godliness, hard work, and honesty

Other New England Colonies Puritan intolerance lead to new colonies Connecticut established based on any religion in government New Hampshire established based on freedom to fur trade and fish

Reasons for Middle Colonies Northern for Religion Southern for gold/crops Middle colonies established for combination of all reasons English, Dutch, Swedish all were attracted to middle colonies

New York Dutch first established New Amsterdam for trade Dutch area was overtaken and split by English and named after Duke of York Forming New Jersey and New York as English colonies Delaware and Pennsylvania were later carved out

Read pg 90-91 (section All faiths accepted in Pennsylvania and The middle colonies prosper) Explain why the middle colonies were successful. Explain why Pennsylvania was successful. Compare the successes of both the middle colonies and Pennsylvania. (can include reasoning from New England section of PP)

Southern Colonies Maryland was established as a safe haven for Catholics Spain and Portugal = Catholics England = Anglican (Church of England) George Calvert or Lord Baltimore asked his buddy the king for colonial land Granted but he died, Son began colony

Carolina King Charles II gave land to 8 Lord Proprietors Helped him with restoring Constitutional Monarchy in England Did not make money as hoped by renting land to settlers

North and South Carolina Charlestown had been established and was creating wealth Albemarle was staying the same and causing political unrest The two parts grew differently until in 1712 the colony was split in to North and South

Georgia Established as a place for debtors to live And to keep the Spanish in Florida Not many debtors came to settle and war broke out in Florida between Spanish and Native Americans Strict land rules also slowed growth

Southern Colonies Dates Jamestown founded in 1607 Maryland began in 1630 Carolinas settled in the 1660s Georgia in early 1700s

Southern Living North grew to living in towns South remained a plantation location Plantation – a large farm on which crops are grown for sale NC remained small farms due to location SC grew with tobacco and rice production

Charlestown For plantation owners and traders Charlestown became the hot place Shops, theaters, fine London fashions For enslaved people it was the sight of the largest slave trade in the Southern Colonies
