AGENDA THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TODAY’S NONPROFIT BOARD CHAIR TEN COMMON REASONS WHY APPPOINTING A NEW BOARD CHAIR CAN BE DIFFICULT TEN SPECIFIC ACTIONS THAT CAN BE UNDERTAKEN TO ELIMINATE THE DIFFICULTY

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TODAY’S NONPROFIT BOARD CHAIR     RESPECTED LEADER TRUSTED PARTNER CONSENSUS BUILDER COLLABORATOR FUTURE FOCUSED ENTHUSIASTIC AMBASSADOR INFLUENCIAL COMMUNICATOR RESULTS ORIENTED

TEN COMMON REASONS WHY APPPOINTING A NEW BOARD CHAIR CAN BE DIFFICULT   PERCEPTION OF THAT THE JOB REQUIRES TOO MUCH TIME FEELINGS OF “UNPREPAREDNESS” TOO MUCH BOARD POLITICS OR BUREAUCRACY TO DEAL WITH VERY FEW REWARDS OR RECOGNTIONS FOR THE EFFORT POORLY DEFINED BOARD ROLES AND COMMITTEE STRUCTURES NOT PROPERLY ESTABLISHED

TEN COMMON REASONS WHY APPPOINTING A NEW BOARD CHAIR CAN BE DIFFICULT   I LIKE THE ORGANIZATION, BUT… THE CURRENT BOARD CHAIR HAS NOT DEVELOPED A SUCCESSION PLAN OR GROOMED A SUCCESSOR THE CURRENT BOARD IS UNWILLING TO RELINGUISH THE REINS NO ONE EVER DISCUSSES THE ISSUE AT BOARD MEETING NO THOUGHT TO RECRUITING LEADERSHIP TALENTS

TEN SPECIFIC ACTIONS THAT CAN BE UNDERTAKEN TO ELIMINATE THE DIFFICULTY   IMMEDIATELY ASSESS THE CURRENT LEADERSHIP TALENT ASK YOUR CURRENT BOARD CHAIR TO BEGIN TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL CANDIDATES FROM CURRENT BOARD INSTITUTE ONGOING BOARD GOVERNANCE TRAINING FOR ALL MEMBERS CONSIDER OFFERING CHAIR-ELECT A LEADERSHIP COACH

TEN SPECIFIC ACTIONS THAT CAN BE UNDERTAKEN TO ELIMINATE THE DIFFICULTY ESTABLISH AN EFFECTIVE GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE ENSURE THAT THE WORK OF THE BOARD IS DONE EFFICIENTLY DEVELOP WAYS TO REWARD AND RECOGNIZE YOUR BOARD MEMBERS PROVIDE MEMBERS OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE ON A WIDE ARRAY OF COMMITTEES AND TASK FORCES BUILD A CULTURE OF SUCCESS. INDIVIDUALS ARE MORE LIKELY TO WANT TO LEAD A BOARD THAT IS PERCEIVED AS A “WINNER” .
