Welcome to Back to School Night 2017-2018 NMS

SHARPENING SKILLS Learning to learn No longer telling me what they know but showing me Involves a different skill set – study skills are different. Critical thinking, application, synthesis, connecting ideas, problem solving,

What are the goals for my child in this class? To become an organized student To enhance cooperative learning skills To increase problem solving ability/ critical thinking To have a better understanding of environmental science and the environment around them

How will my child achieve these goals? Keeping an organized binder Group work Note taking Hands-on activities/ Labs Demonstrations Diagrams

What is the homework policy? Homework is given approximately 4 nights a week. Homework checks are random (3-5 points). No late daily homework is accepted. Labs and long-term projects may be turned in late with a letter grade deduction for each day after the due date. HW is posted on Fusion Website

How will my child be assessed? Tests: announced a week in advance Quizzes: either announced or unannounced (Section or Notebook) Homework Class work Labs/ Projects A+

How will I know my child’s progress? Check the HAC Interims are calculated halfway through every marking period.

What if my child is absent/vacation? Students will need to see me the next day during RA to check on missed assignments. Make up work will need to be completed within an appropriate amount of time. If student is planning to be absent, he/she can receive the work ahead of time.

Where can my child go for additional help in science? RA period any day except 2B Clinic on Thursdays after school

SCIENCE FAIR OPPORTUNITIES   Intel PJAS www.pjas.net Judging Students are judged, within their category and grade level, against all others in their category Students are judged, within their category and grade level, against a rubric, based on the category Presentation Students present using tri-fold posters to judges (students also need an abstract (bring at 5-10 copies) and a research report) Students present a 10 minute talk with overheads to judges Progression First and second place award winners at the local fair (Bucks County) can go on to the Delaware Valley Science Fair, then the International Fair. First place award winners at the local fair (District 1C) can go on to the State Competition. Special note Team projects are allowed NO team projects http://www.sciserv.org/isef/
