Market for this type of degree Home and international students who have taken a first degree in Education, Humanities or other subjects and want to teach English overseas International students with a related or unrelated first degree who want to train to become English teachers (next slide contains more info on this) Teachers with CELTA or DELTA who want to teach English in higher education in UK or overseas International students with a first degree in Education which carries QTS and are currently teaching in state schools UK teachers who want a change of teaching career Employees of international Ministries of Education

Main considerations when marketing Country must offer teachers a good salary or there is no point in them spending money on an international qualification (eg: GCC, Japan) Business and entrepreneurship growth in the country mean there will be openings for ESP teachers, a more lucrative career for teachers and one where MA TESOL is the industry standard qualification (eg: China, Thailand, Kazakhstan) Countries where higher education is taught in English. In previous years they recruited native speakers of English, but these days many countries prefer to recruit their own people wherever possible (eg: GCC, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, MENA, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka) Countries where there are a high number of language schools, summer schools for children and high parental income (eg: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Greece & Europe)

Local competition University of South Wales MA TESOL: only has 4 modules, no micro teaching, no specialisms such as TEYL and ESP/ EAP University of Wales Trinity St. David: No MA TESOL or similar programme Cardiff University MA Applied Linguistics: more theoretical programme, focussing on linguistics. Does not prepare students for classroom teaching Swansea University MA TEFL: No ESP/ EAP module, but includes Language Testing and Vocabulary modules University of the West of England: No MA TESOL or similar programme Bath Spa University MA TESOL: offers only 3 TESOL related modules, plus a Research Methods module (MA programme is run by one member of staff)

How the Cardiff Met MA TESOL stands out MA TESOL provides practical training as well as background theory and research. Many courses focus only on the theoretical and research side. All module leaders are qualified to PhD level in TESOL or Applied Linguistics. All staff have extensive experience in teaching English around the world in a variety of contexts Students will be able to observe experienced teachers of English for Academic Purposes in the university’s English Language Training Centre (ELTC) as part of their course Cardiff Met also offers the CELTA, a 4 week practical training certificate which is recognised by the British Council worldwide. The course is taught by Dr Gabriel Roberts, one of the MA TESOL module leaders. Students on the MA TESOL may decide to apply for a place on this course after they complete the MA.

Unique features of our modules: 1 We offer visits to local multicultural primary schools as part of the TEYL module. Students will spend a full morning in the schools, supervised by the module tutor, Dr Helen Emery who is an internationally known academic & author in the area of TEYL

Unique feature 2 Introduction to TESOL Methodology module includes Micro-Teaching Practice which is assessed and provides a practical training in teaching English. This module is led by Dr Nik Konstantakis who has many years of English language teaching experience.

Unique feature 3 The MA TESOL offers a module in Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) which is led by Dr Gabriel Roberts and aims to prepare students to teach in Business, Industry, Higher Education etc. This is a popular module with students on MAs, but is not offered by many universities

Careers in TESOL where the MA Education: TESOL would be appropriate Teaching academic English in universities – UK and international Teaching general English or young learners in language schools (often the CELTA is an additional requirement) Teaching ESP in industry, business, universities (eg: English for medicine and bioscience, English for engineering, English for hotel & catering) Teaching in an overseas state school (usually at BA or B.Ed. (QTS) would be required in addition) ELT publishers – editorial work Proof reading of research publications in the field ELT testing and assessment services, eg: Cambridge ESOL, Oxford Examinations ELT course book writing Employees of Ministries of Education who work with English teachers
