CONCEPTS A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Susan watches the birds in the forest. A singular noun names only one person, place, thing, or idea. The birds live in the forest. A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

A common noun names any person, place, or thing. Buy me a bird, please. A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing. All proper nouns are capitalized. My best friend is Susan.
