Parts of speech
Nouns A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are the subject of a sentence.
2 types of nouns: Common Noun- A noun that does not name a specific person, place or thing. (always lowercase) Proper Noun- A noun that names a specific person, place or thing (always Uppercase)
1. The students in Mr. Faulkner’s class are working on grammar. In the following sentences, write down all the nouns. Then, identify them as common nouns (C) or proper nouns (Pr). 1. Pronouns A pronoun is any word that takes the place of a noun. There are 3 types: subject, object, and possessive
Identify the subject pronouns in the following sentences: Subject pronouns are always going to be performing the action of the sentence (they’re the subject). Identify the object pronouns in the following sentences: Object pronouns are the persons/things RECEIVING the action of the sentence. Think of Object pronouns as the people on the opposite end from the Subject pronouns. Identify the possessive pronouns in the following sentences: Possessive pronouns are the ones which show ownership. Pronoun practice Write down ALL of the pronouns in each of the following sentences. Label each pronoun as either Subject (S), Object (O), or Possessive (Pos). 17.
