CyberBullying

Take out a piece of paper and answer the following questions. How many times a day do you look at your phone? Is technology killing friendships? What percentage of teenagers use social networking sites? How much time does the average teenager spend on social networking sites? How much time do people spend on their phone?

How many times a day do you look at your phone? The average person does it 110 times a DAY (and up to every 6 seconds in the evening) People look at their phones the most between peak hours of 5pm and 8pm During these hours, 75% of users are actively using their devices This drops to a quarter of active users between 3am and 5am  Average number of times a user checks their phone is nine times an hour This increases to once every six seconds for 'highest frequency users'

Is technology killing friendships? Yes, no and both. The reason most people say that this topic is both is because cyberbullying is causing a lot of problems with technology. Then again, technology is good because you meet new friends....  Technology is ruining/killing friendships but in some eyes it isn't.

What percentage of teenagers use social networking sites? According to a Pew survey conducted during 2014 and 2015, 94 percent of teens who go online using a mobile device do so daily. Teens use multiple social platforms. Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are the most popular, and 71 percent of teens say they use more than one social media site. May 13, 2016

How much time does the average teenager spend on social networking sites? Teens are spending more than one-third of their days using media such as online video or music — nearly 9 hours on average, according to a new study from the family technology education non-profit group, Common Sense Media. For tweens, those between the ages of 8 and 12, the average is nearly six hours per day.

How much time do people spend on their phone? A recent study by mobileinsurance.com has revealed that the average person spends 90 minutes a day on their phone. That figure may not sound like a lot but that amounts to up to 23 days a year and 3.9 years of the average person's life is spent staring at their phone screen. So what do we spend all that time doing?

What is Cyberbullying? According to the CDC: Any type of harassment or bullying (teasing, telling lies, making fun of someone, making rude or mean comments, spreading rumors, or making threatening or aggressive comments) that occurs through email, a chat room, instant messaging, a website (including blogs), or text messaging.

How Can You Avoid Cyberbullying? Don’t give your phone number/email address to anyone you don’t trust Don’t give your pin number or password to anyone!!!!!!! Set privacy settings on your accounts Don’t accept friendships online of anyone you don’t trust Defriend or block anyone who has cyberbullied you in the past Never post or share personal information/photos that you are embarrassed of While these techniques may not stop all cyberbullies they certainly can help prevent it in the future

Ways to Handle Cyberbullying Stop-Block-Tell Stop: “Take-5”: step away from the computer and do something that relaxes you (yoga, shoot hoops, go for a walk) Block: block the cyberbully from your friend list Tell: if cyberbullying continues than report it How to Report it: Tell a parent/adult you trust Report it to the service provider: they may be breaking the terms of service Keep evidence of cyberbullying: save emails or messages, print it out, take a picture

Process Questions If you were being cyber bullied, what would you do? What are some relaxation methods someone could use to “take 5”? Who are some adults people can talk to about being cyber bullied? If a friend was being cyber bullied what would you do?
