Things to See at the Site The site includes the library cave, which contains many documents from the 5th to 11th century. The caves has lots of murals that gives visitors a visual picture of what’s going on in that picture. It could be an ancient and legendary story related to Buddhism.

Types of Caves The caves are organized by eras of classic China. Southern caves are usually decorated while northern caves are left without being painted. There are over a thousand caves, but some weren’t found again. Some eras (cave groups) are Northern Wei, High Tang, and Song Dynasty.

Cave Art The murals were created between the 5th and 14th century. They were designed to be Buddhist-styled. An example of a mural is a drawing of Avalokitesvara. The murals mostly visualizes japata tales, or Buddhist tales.

History Dunhuang used to be a place to prevent Huns from crossing. A Buddhist made the cave in the 4th century and it expanded along with more monks throughout one millennium. Art were designed during the expansion. In the 20th century, modern people discovered many caves and renovated art from now on so it’s known as a site.
