History of Schloss Rheinfels 1245 Castle built above St Goar by Count Dieter von Katzenelbogen. 16th century: Thanks to the Earls of Hesse, it underwent conversion into an impressive Renaissance mansion. 17/18th centuries: Conversion into the most formidable fortress on the Rhein against which all enemy attacks failed. 1794 Captured by the French troops and blown up. 19/20th centuries: The huge mass of ruins covering the top of the hill is still one of the most noteworthy sites along the Rhein. Open to the public during the summer season. [Information taken from “Castles On The Rhein”]
