Boll Weevil & The Drought The Boll Weevil was a bug that laid its eggs in cotton and the larvae eat the cotton, killing the boll before it matured Came from Mexico in 1915 The drought lasted from 1924 – 1927 Negative: It killed even more agriculture Positive: It stopped the boll weevil

Great Depression & New Deal Georgia was already in an economic depression due to the drought & boll weevil. The Great Depression began with the stock market crash of Oct. 29, 1929 The New Deal was a set of programs made by FDR to help the economy AAA: Agricultural Adjustment Act – purpose to raise the price of crops by limiting supplies CCC: Civilian Conservation Crops - housing, food, and money were given to young men who performed community projects (soil conservation, etc) REA: Rural Electrification Act – Loans to rural areas for electricity SSA: Social Security Act – Unemployment Insurance, wages for retired persons

Lend-Lease Act & Pearl Harbor Lend-Lease Act: An arrangement that allowed Allies to borrow weapons and ammo from the US when they ran out of money We wouldn’t sell to Japan so… On Dec. 7, 1941, Japan retaliated by bombing US Naval forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii This is the action that brought the USA into WWII

GA Contributions to WWII Shipyards at Savannah and Brunswick built Liberty Ships which were Cargo and Soldier transport ships Gave jobs to Women & African Americans Bell Bombers (B-29s) were built at Bell Bomber Plant in Marietta (today its’ called Lockheed) Also gave jobs to Women & African Americans Military Bases in GA provided training and held POWs (prisoners of war)

Brown v. Board of Education This case wanted to end school segregation The Supreme Court said that segregation in public places was UNCONSTITUTIONAL This case overturned the case of PLESSY V. FERGUSON which had made segregation legal 60 years earlier

Albany Movement, March on Washington, Civil Rights 1964 Albany Movement: purpose was to integrate public places Considered a failure because they attempted to integrate too many places MLK tried to help but was arrested March on Washington: For Jobs and Freedom The purpose was to get a Civil Rights Act passed 250,000 people attended & MLK gave his “I have a dream” speech Civil Rights Act of 1964: passed to guarantee protection from discrimination and segregation

1996 Olympic Games Brought national recognition to the state New state-of-the-art sports facilities New roads, transportation, green spaces, Hotels, Restaurants $5 Billion in revenue GA still benefits from the Olympics due to Tourism, etc…

Impact of Immigrants 1970s 1980s 1990s – Today Refugees from Asia: Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos 1980s Immigrants from Europe, Africa 1990s – Today Immigrants from Hispanic countries They help support the Poultry & Carpet Industries

President Franklin Roosevelt (FDR) Created the New Deal Programs to help the economy recover from the Great Depression Spent time in Warm Springs for polio rehab President for 4 Terms Died at Warm Springs from a Stroke

Eugene Talmadge Controversial politician (Southern Democrat) Caused the Universities in GA to lose accreditation due to support of segregation Hated FDR’s New Deal programs

William Hartsfield, Ivan Allen, Jr. & Ellis Arnall Hartsfield: brought the first airport to Atlanta Allen: brought sports teams to Atlanta Arnall: took down “colored” signs in the Capitol, fixed taxes & lowered voting age to 18

Benjamin Mays, MLK, Jr. and SNCC Mays: Professor at Morehouse, teacher and mentor to MLK MLK, Jr.: favored NON-VIOLENCE as a means to achieve equality for African Americans SNCC: Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee Student-led protests, sit-ins, lunch counter sit-ins, marches

Richard Russell & Carl Vinson Long-serving US Senator Brought military bases to GA which helped the economy Vinson: Long-serving US Representative Known as “Father of Two-Ocean Navy” Split the Navy among the East Coast & West Coast

Charlayne Hunter & Hamilton Holmes First two African Americans to integrate UGA

Jimmy Carter Born in Plains, GA His views on Segregation were different from others in Plains – he was against it! GA Congressman GA Governor Only President from GA Considered a failure due to poor economy, oil shortages, Iranian Hostage Crisis He did have some positive outcomes! After President Received Medal of Freedom, Nobel Peace Prize, Author of many books, Habitat for Humanity

Maynard Jackson & Andrew Young Maynard Jackson elected Atlanta Mayor in 1973 1st Black Mayor of a major southern (formerly Confederate) city Expanded the Airport Helped bring the Olympics to Atlanta Andrew Young elected to US House of Reps in 1970s First Black Rep since Reconstruction Became Mayor after Maynard Jackson US Ambassador Helped bring the Olympics to GA
