Warming up 1 Oh hello there, I've got a toothache and I'd like to book an appointment to see the dentist today, if you can. 2 The only opening we have after lunch is 1:15, but I might be able to work/squeeze you in after 4. Would that be a better time? 3 I’ll just check my diary.

4 I’ve got to go and see someone. It’s been nice talking to you 4 I’ve got to go and see someone. It’s been nice talking to you. 6 We’re going to have to change our arrangement for the 15th 6 We’re going to have to change our arrangement for the 15th. Something has come up. I’ve got to go over to Berlin to see a client. Can we put it off till the 22nd? 7 Can we leave it open for the time being? I’ll get back in touch when I’m not so busy.

8 I had a date for May 12 but I had to ask you to change it 8 I had a date for May 12 but I had to ask you to change it. I asked for any day between May 14 and 17. 9 I recently wrote to you about an interview date, but I haven't had any reply. 10 Can you put me down for that time slot?

David: Education Department. Rachel: Hi David, it’s Rachel. Can I speak to Jenny please? David: Oh, hi Rachel, I’m sorry she’s on the other line right now, can I help? Rachel: Well actually I’m phoning to arrange an appointment. She wanted to see me about the schools project - towards the end of this week, I think she said. David: Okay, let me see … (consults the diary) .how about Thursday morning? Rachel: I can’t make it in the morning, I’m afraid. I’m over at the other site. Can Jenny do the afternoon? David: No, she’s got a meeting for most of the afternoon. What about Friday then? Rachel: Sure. Some time in the morning? David: Yes, I think the best time would be about 11. Rachel: Fine by me. How about Monday? What about Tuesday? Could we say Thursday 6th? Would that be okay? Would Tuesday suit you? When would suit you? I can’t\won’t be able to make Monday.

RECEPTIONIST: Good morning, Hadd Imports, how can I help you? Julio : Good morning, Julio Cortez-Garcia calling from New York. I’m phoning to arrange an appointment with Jenny Ross. She wanted to discuss the key provisions of the sales contract,I think she said. RECEPTIONIST: Hold the line, please. I'll put you through to Ms. Ross’ secretary. SECRETARY: Hello, Mr. Cortez-Garcia. Thanks for calling. Now, let me pull out your schedule record. Could I say you suggested a date for the end of April? Julio : Originally I suggested a date for April 29th, but I had to ask you to change it. Something has up. I can come almost any time next month and probably towards the end of a week would suit me best.

SECRETARY: I see. Well, how about the week beginning May 24th. Ms SECRETARY: I see. Well, how about the week beginning May 24th? Ms. Ross is away during the middle of the month, so either the end of May or the first week of June would be best. Julio : Could we make it earlier then? I mean - early in May? How about the week beginning the 6th? Let me see ... Could we say Tuesday 7th? SECRETARY: Yes, that's fine. Would you plan to arrive in Sydney that day, or come the night before and stay in a hotel?

Julio : Oh, I think it would be better to arrive the night before and meet early in the day. Then I think I'd plan to leave the same day. SECRETARY: Well, I'm sure Ms. Ross would like to meet you for dinner on the Tuesday evening. Julio : That’s so kind. SECRETARY: Well, let me key in the new schedule into the system. Ok, I'll fix you a hotel in walking distance of our company. Then I’ll send you an email confirming all the details, and you can send your flight details in return. Julio : Thanks so much. It’s so kind of you. SECRETARY: You’re welcome. Did I get everything?

About Entertainment A: Well, I was wondering if we could fix something up for you when you come? Would you be free on Monday evening? If you like we could do something together? B:I think the theatre would be interesting. I'd like that. A: We'll do that then. I'll find out exactly what's on, then I'll call you.

Julio : Yes, I think so. I expect your email Julio : Yes, I think so. I expect your email. Do you have my email address? SECRETARY: Sure, but I’d better check that with you. Is it Cortez-Garcia@ yahoo.com? Julio : Exactly. SECRETARY: Thanks for calling, Mr. Cortez-Garcia. We look forward to seeing you in May. Julio : Thank you. I expect coming to Sydney. Goodbye. SECRETARY: Goodbye, Mr. Cortez-Garcia.

1 E: Hello Mr. Smith, this is Edward Green from Promising Investments.  Did I catch you at a good time? S: What is it about? E: As part of our wealth management advisory service we offer comprehensive financial, retirement, and estate planning. Helping you find the best yields around is only a small part of what we do. I'd like to get together with you to see if there is any way we can help you improve your financial situation and attain your goals.

S: Oh, I don't need that. E: A lot of people had the same reaction as you did when I first called -- before they had a chance to see how what we do will benefit them. The fund I want you to know has averaged better than 10% a year for the past decade, with no down years.

S: Send me some literature. E: Can't we just get together?

S: I'm too busy these days. E: Mr. Smith, the only reason I was calling was to set an appointment. It won’t take long. Is it possible if I touch base with you next Thursday at 1pm to see if you have any questions? Is this the best number to reach you at?

S: Call back next Wednesday morning 8 sharp. E: Thanks so much for your time. It was great speaking with you. Can I make a note of your e-mail address so I can get that information out to you? S: abc@gmail.com. E: abc@gmail.com, did I get it right, Mr. Smith? S: Right. E: I’ll leave you a voicemail message after I send it. I’ll be looking forward to talking to you next Wednesday, Mr. Smith.

2 E: Mr. Smith, this is Edward Green, calling back from Promising Investments.  We talked a week ago, and I had mailed you some brief information regarding the Happiness Fund.  As I had mentioned, the fund has averaged better than 10% a year for the past decade, with no down years.  My clients have been able to exceed market returns, with much less volatility and risk. We could sit down, and see if perhaps this investment would have a place in your portfolio.

S: I lost money in the bond/stock market! E: I burned my mouth once eating, I didn't stop eating...I just started learning to eat more carefully. Someone sold you on emotion before to buy.  I’m selling you on facts.

S: I've already got a broker. E: Yes. I’m not asking you to interrupt that relationship. Nor is that my goal. But quite frankly, your broker is not offering you this opportunity, 10%, I am. Let's start small with only 1000 shares. Is this level comfortable for you?

S: I really don't need another broker. E: Believe me I understand, many of my best clients felt the same way when we first started. Today, for most of these people I'm their only financial advisor. Whether our relationship goes from here is up to you. Let’s get together anyway. Give us an opportunity to show you how good we are and lock in 10%.

S: Our fund is mostly tied up on current imports. E: I understand. You just don't have this as a priority right now. That's fine. If it's okay, can I check back later? In the meantime, don't hesitate to touch base yourself if anything changes. S: About 6 months later. E: Thanks for your time, Mr. Smith. Talk to you in November.
