EFFECTS OF pH ON GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT BIOPROCESS AND ENGINEERING EFFECTS OF pH ON GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT

Microbial growth is affected by the local pH Change in pH can effect growth and development and effects nature of call surface.

Effect On Biomass Composition & Morphology The Antigen 4 of Yersinia pestis is produced only at pH value below 6.9 (Optimum 5.9) pH value of cultures of Bacillus species effects the cell wall composition. The hyphal morphology of Penicillium chrysogenum gets effected with increase in pH . Cell wall becomes weaker and gets ruptured easily.

The culture pH value effects the cell surface properties like adhesion and flocculation of biomass. The degree of metal ion chelation depends on pH value. Klebsiella aerogens at pH 5 under anaerobic conditions produces 2,3-butanediol as major fermentation product of sugar but at pH 7 it produces lactate

Effects Of pH On Growth And Metabolism In anaerobic metabolism, at acidic pH produce neutral product, and but at alkaline pH they produce organic acids. Nature of end product of sugar terminates by Streptococci and Lactobacillus can be pH dependent, i.e. at acidic pH lactic acid is produced but at basic pH acetic and formic acids are produced.
