Cultural Differences in Colonial Texas Anglos vs. Mexicans Distrust: The United States was a power on the rise, and Mexico feared it would try to take Texas. The U.S. had recently purchased the Louisiana territory. (right next to Mexico) The U.S. offered to buy Texas for $1 million, but Mexico refused.
Cultural Differences in Colonial Texas Anglo perspective: The U.S. was born out of a revolution, but believed the military should serve the people. The U.S. believed civilians should rule the country, The U.S. believed that there should be separation between the Church and State.
Cultural Differences in Colonial Texas Mexican Perspective There should be three centers of power: The Army- did not have to answer to the civilians, could put someone in jail without charging them with a crime. The Catholic Church- leaders of the church played an important role in government. Leaders of the Mexican Revolution (the wealthy) because of their wealth and their service to Mexico, they should have power.
Cultural Differences in Colonial Texas Slavery: Mexico did not allow slavery. MX did let settlers to bring in slaves for a while because the settlers would not come without their slaves and Mexico was desperate to settle East Texas. Later they tried to ban slavery but could not enforce it.
