MENTAL HEALTH

Mental Health What is Mental Health? “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” What is Mental Illness? “collectively all diagnosable mental disorders” or “health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior (or some combination thereof) associated with distress and/or impaired functioning.”

Mentally Healthy Person Accepts themselves Has a realistic self- concept Has a positive attitude Takes responsibility for actions Trusts judgments and feelings Forms close ties

-Impulse Control and Addiction Disorders Mentally Ill Person People who are mentally ill can suffer from many different types of mental illnesses and disorders such as: -Anxiety Disorders -Mood Disorders -Psychotic Disorders -Impulse Control and Addiction Disorders

Anxiety Disorders People with anxiety disorders respond to certain objects or situations with fear and dread, as well as with physical signs of anxiety or nervousness, such as a rapid heartbeat and sweating. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – Caused by a traumatic experience and can cause fear, helplessness, anger and guilt. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – Repeated actions or thoughts can conflict with living a normal life.

Mood Disorders These disorders, also called affective disorders, involve persistent feelings of sadness or periods of feeling overly happy, or fluctuations from extreme happiness to extreme sadness. Bipolar Disorder – Characterized by extreme changes in mood. Can lead to risky behavior. Damaged relationships and suicidal tendencies Depression - Clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for a longer period of time.

Psychotic Disorders Psychotic disorders involve distorted awareness and thinking. Two of the most common symptoms of psychotic disorders are hallucinations -- the experience of images or sounds that are not real, such as hearing voices -- and delusions, which are false beliefs that the ill person accepts as true, despite evidence to the contrary Schizophrenia - Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder that distorts the way a person thinks, acts, expresses emotions, perceives reality, and relates to others. People with schizophrenia -- the most chronic and disabling of the major mental illnesses -- often have problems functioning in society, at work, at school, and in relationships.

Impulse Control and Addiction Disorder People with impulse control disorders are unable to resist urges, or impulses, to perform acts that could be harmful to themselves or others. Often, people with these disorders become so involved with the objects of their addiction that they begin to ignore responsibilities and relationships. Pyromania (starting fires), Kleptomania (stealing), Gambling. Alcohol and Drugs are common objects of addiction.
