Hooke’s Joint A Hooke’s joint is used to connect two shafts, which are intersecting at a small angle. The end of each shaft is forked to U-type and each fork provides two bearings for the arms of a cross. The arms of the cross are perpendicular to each other.

Figure 1:- Hooke’s joint

The motion is transmitted from the driving shaft to driven shaft through a cross. The inclination of two shaft may be constant, but in actual practice it varies, when the motion is transmitted. The main application of the Universal or Hooke’s joint is found in the transmission from the gear box to differential or back axle of the automobiles.

It is also used for transmission of power to different spindles of multiple drilling machine. It is also used as a knee joint in milling machines. In case of automobiles we use two Hooke’s joints one at each end of the propeller shaft, connecting the gear box on one end and the differential on the other end.

UNIVERSAL JOINTS U-joints are crosses between two Y-shaped yokes. Because U-joints transfer power at an angle they do not rotate at a constant velocity nor are they vibration free.

TYPES of U - JOINTS Single universal joint retained by either an inside or outside snap ring. Spicer - outside snap ring Mechanics or Detroit - inside snap ring Universal joints held in the yoke by U-bolts or lock plates.

CANCELING ANGLES Vibrations can be reduced by canceling angles. Figure:- Canceling Angles

PHASING of U - JOINTS To provide for this canceling effect, drive shafts should have at least two U-joints and their angles must be slight and equal to each other. Speed fluctuations can be canceled if the driven yoke has the same point of rotation, or same plane , as the driving yoke.
