SOLID WASTE COMMITTEE OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC WORKS ASSOCIATION

OUR MISSION:

The Solid Waste Management Technical Committee will provide APWA members with the necessary information to allow successful management of solid waste infrastructure and to deliver solid waste services in a cost effective manner.

HOW WILL WE DO THIS?

By providing topics and authors to provide between three and five articles for the Solid Waste issue of the APWA Reporter.

By developing solid waste specific education sessions to be presented during the APWA Congress each year.

By seeking projects where coordination and cooperation can occur between APWA and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) which will benefit both memberships.

By producing APWA publications on the many facets of solid waste such as The Beneficial Uses of Closed Landfills, published in 2003.

By offering suggestions to Chapters and individual agencies for special observances of environmental events Such as: Waste Reduction Recycling National Public Works Week Earth Day National Recycling Day

By recognizing outstanding work in the profession through award of the Solid Waste Manager of the Year Award to a deserving APWA member. Nancy Nevil, Environmental Waste Services Manager, Plano, TX

By monitoring legislation and regulatory action proposed at the federal level, offering professional testimony and serving on federal Task Forces, when invited to do so.

By contributing subject-specific content for a chapter in a proposed new Emergency Management Manual for Public Works Departments.

By drafting solid waste-related position statements for adoption by the APWA Board which address on-going concerns at the Federal level which will impact local agencies.

By monitoring the latest technologies and products in the solid waste field and providing the findings to the membership through the Environment infoNOW community.

By developing brochures which provide suggestions and creative ways to help the community educate their citizens about the benefits of protecting the environment.

HOW CAN THIS COMMITTEE ASSIST YOUR LOCAL CHAPTER?

Committee members are available to offer information or provide updates on issues at the federal level to local chapters.

Links to articles and publications which may be of interest to solid waste practitioners are provided through a quarterly electronic newsletter.

Surveys are conducted periodically to identify areas of concern to local agencies and chapters to assist the committee in offering topics for Click, Listen, and Learn sessions and other educational programs which may be valuable due to new legislation or major emphasis.

HOW CAN I KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING?

Visit the APWA web site at www. apwa Visit the APWA web site at www.apwa.net and link to the Solid Waste Technical Committee pages

A complete roster of current committee members, including contact information, and meeting summaries for each teleconference call are available for your review.

Each Technical Committee serves as the link between the local agencies and chapters to the national association. Your input is valuable.
