CHAPTER 13 13-1 Types of Production 6/19/2018 Goal 1 Describe the role of producers in the economy and the forms of production. Goal 2 Differentiate among the various types of manufacturing.

DO NOW “The economy begins with production” What does the following phrase mean to you? “The economy begins with production”

PRODUCTION AS AN ECONOMIC ACTIVITY Role of producers – categories of products produced and the types of businesses that make products Natural resources – raw material supplied by nature Agricultural products – crops and animals raised by farmers Processed goods – are products that have been changed in form to increase their value and usefulness Forms of production Extraction and cultivation – products are obtained from nature or grown using natural resources Processing – changing and improving the form of another product Manufacturing – combines raw materials and processed goods into finished products

MANUFACTURING A manufacturing process – several manufacturers are a part of the total activity needed to produce goods that are purchased by consumers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmLsV9cSk0o Types of manufacturing procedures Mass production – assembly process that makes a large number of identical products using a continuous efficient procedure (What did Ford do to contribute to mass production?) Custom manufacturing – building a specific and unique product to meet the needs of each customer Materials processing – changing the form of raw materials so they can be consumed or used to make other products

Checkpoint  What is the difference between custom manufacturing and materials processing?

Answer to Check point Custom manufacturing is building a unique product to meet the needs of one customer. Materials processing is changing the form of raw materials so they can be used to make other products. Custom manufacturing involves a smaller amount of materials; materials processing involves larger quantities.

Assignment How Products Are Made explains and details the manufacturing process of a wide variety of products, from daily household items to complicated electronic equipment and heavy machinery. You may work alone or with a partner: pick one product and create a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation describing the steps (in your own words do not copy from web site) starting from raw material to the finished products for consumers or businesses to use You will present to the class www.madehow.com
