TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update TF-EMC2 Copenhagen 2010-09-22 Valter Nordh, NORDUnet / GU

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update What is eduGAIN What is eduGAIN NOT? eduGAIN timeline Participate in eduGAIN!? eduGAIN policy AoB

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update What is eduGAIN eduGAIN is a project funded by the GEANT-project, aiming at offering a service that will enable interconnectivity between participating federations. eduGAIN can be seen as the transport layer between participating federations, where participating federations take responsibility for what they expose to eduGAIN. eduGAIN will by default be offered as an opt in service (dependent on the participating federation) - SP/IdP. eduGAIN is offering a number of optional technical profiles that will set standards in certain areas. WebSSO is the primary as well as the Data Protection profile (see below)

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update What is eduGAIN NOT? eduGAIN is not trying to harmonize the meaning of student or employee all over the globe... eduGAIN will NOT solve all questions related to PII items, BUT we have an optional Data Protection profile that will solve (all?) PII questions. eduGAIN will NOT connect any entities directly, only through federations.

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update Summary of the eduGAIN service A Metadata aggregator (MDS) that follows certain rules when aggregating metadata from participating federations. An operations team running the MDS and assisting federations in applying for membership/acting as a single point of contact for eduGAIN. A policy for eduGAIN covering the governance of eduGAIN and requirements of the participating federations. Assistance to participating federations in marketing / rolling out eduGAIN within the federation.

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update Brief Timeline for the eduGAIN project 1 of April 2010 “pre pilot” of the eduGAIN GÉANT3-service started 1 of October 2010 as pilot service 1 of April 2011 eduGAIN GÉANT3-service in production 1 of April 2013 GÉANT3 Project terminates

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update Participate in eduGAIN!? eduGAIN will take time to grow, so lets start growing! What makes eduGAIN is the participating federations… eduGAIN use cases, round ∞ For more information about eduGAIN, send an e-mail to: edugain-ot@geant.net or valter.nordh@gu.se

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update eduGAIN policy A big part of eduGAIN is the policy which sets the boundaries for which within eduGAIN operates. The eduGAIN policy has been out for public review over the summer and we received more then 170 comments in total. There is a “new” commenting period until the 27 of Sep, after this date the eduGAIN policy goes to Dante for internal review and preparations for finalization and approval from the NREN PC. We are aiming for an approved eduGAIN policy by the end of the year

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update eduGAIN policy eduGAIN Policy sub-task publishes: -comments received in the public call for comments during July-August -resolutions on the comments -revised versions of the documents that were subject to the call for comments Please visit www.edugain.org/policy for all the comments!!

TF-EMC2 - eduGAIN update eduGAIN policy part 2 – highlights of some of the 170 comments A lot of clarifications and coherence in wording Changed confederation to interfederation Added Attribute Providers to the policy Exposed identities must be identifiable (connectable to an individual)
