Unit 1 Weather Resistance Lesson 8

The purpose of weather resistance: keeping occupants in an acceptable environment ensuring thermal comfort of occupants humidity levels preventing damage to finishes and water staining.

Types and selection of waterproof and impervious materials, including: double glazing use of falls, weather seals and sealants, flashings and soffits.

The location of weather-resistant materials: guttering window and door openings external walls ventilation ducts roof finishes and overhanging eaves.

Discuss together the following question:

Flashing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2pq4VPZE0E

Where can you see flashing on this house?

Ridge - The point of the roof  Verge - The sloping end of the roof   Eaves - Bottom of roof slope.   Fascia - Board that guttering is fitted (you may only want to watch the first 5 mins of this) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM3dX1T3Mj4

How buildings achieve weather resistance On your handout answer the questions below in as much detail as possible. 1) Identify five purposes of weather resistance. 2) Identify six applications of materials on a building that will improve that building’s weather resistance. Teacher/tutor notes (PS 3): Purposes: to keep occupants in an acceptable environment, thermal comfort of occupants, humidity levels, prevention of damage to finishes, prevention of water staining. Materials: selection of waterproof and impervious materials, double glazing, use of falls, weather seals and sealants, flashings, soffits. Location: guttering, window and door openings, external walls, ventilation ducts, roof finishes, overhanging eaves. 3) Identify six locations on a building where weather resistance can be achieved. © Pearson Education Ltd 2013.
