Evolving an ILC focused SCRF Facility from the XFEL Infrastructure Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- DESY 11/2006 XFEL Plans of direct relevance for the EU infrastructure What ILC can offer

Remember: Large labs can supply cryogenics and a good deal of test infrastructure E.g. CERN Plant Trade additional XFEL test hall test stand vs. Existing teststand Several labs have infrastructure Coupler testing Horizontal test setups Also usable for tuner tests This is to a large degree the big money… Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

XFEL Plans of direct relevance for an EU SCRF infrastructure Setting up a significant test infrastructure besides TTF AMTF: Accelerator Module Test Facility for XFEL Production CMTB: Cryomodule Test Bench (exists already) Outsourcing of long electropolishing (EP) step in preparation process to industry Pursuing ILC alternatives with large-grain niobium material Mono- and Multi-cells Demonstrates that there is still some (limited) flexibility within XFEL cavity program Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

XFEL Accelerator Module Test Facility (AMTF) From XFEL-TDR Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Cryomodule Test Bench (CMTB) Currently preparing for high-gradient module M6 Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Outsourcing of EP to Industry The two EP steps are a bottleneck in the current cavity preparation process Industry is in principle capable of doing this process See EP single-cells coming up in this talk (and more…) Done by industry in Japan since many years To start the industrialization process XFEL has requested bids from companies for the first rough EP step of ~100um on 30 cavities Benefits Industry gets experience Reduces load on DESY EP facility Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Large-Grain Single-cell: 1AC3 Test 3 after EP and bake 40 MV/m at high Q0 Test 4 BCP ~40 um ? Test 5 Bake Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Large-Grain Multi-Cells Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

A Synergetic Scenario for a ILC-XFEL Basic assumptions Staging must be possible Funding restrictions Assume dedicated larger infrastructure later (second bid) ILC requirements Focus on high-gradient programme Adaption to ongoing R&D programme Needs dedicated material i.e. cavities XFEL requirements Low impact in terms of scheduling Compatibility of components Would profit from added test capacity Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

ILC-XFEL synergy: Cavities, Modules etc. ILC could offer (finance) additional Cavities for XFEL ILC gets/‘buys‘ right to select cavities out of XFEL process line for high gradient program XFEL modules spares ILC gets/‘buys‘ right to do S2 specific tests Benefits Cost: XFEL discount Additional cavities available for process setup Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

ILC-XFEL synergy: Cavity Preparation XFEL started to outsource EP to a large degree Get pre-processed cavities for XFEL and ILC program To support industrial EP process, ILC could built second and improved EP facility in industry Support re-treatment of cavities to recover performance ILC could use existing facilities at TTF due changed load Increase number of cavities prepared for low-power testing But additional manpower from ILC (e.g. DESY-FH) is required to do extended shift operation Complete new clean room -> second bid Benefits Preparation capacity more quickly available Training scenario for European colleagues Strong industrial involvement Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

ILC-XFEL synergy: Test Infrastructure Vertical testing capacity is a non-issue at DESY Typically up to 4 tests/week could be done Cavity preparation is the bottleneck High-power testing Provide testing capacity for XFEL modules ILC could finance additional stand in AMTF hall using part of exist infrastructure (e.g. cryo!) Get/‘buy‘ right to use existing CMTB for specific tests String test using DESY infrastructure Put spares (see above) in XFEL tunnel? Alternative: Central ILC facility Benefits Cost: XFEL discount Compatible frequencies: Klystrons etc. available Quicker start-up Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

International collaboration Central activities Module integration at central facility Could be either a central ILC facility in Europe (e.g. CERN) or elsewhere Outsource components Cavities (DESY/XFEL) Via XFEL Tuner (INFN, CEA), Coupler (LAL), BPM (CEA), LLRF (Poland), Magnet (CIEMAT) Module cryostat (INFN) Outsource testing High-power individual cavity tests e.g. at CEA High-power module tests e.g. to DESY Benefits Could start on critical path items earlier E.g. Niobium procurement, Cavity fabrication etc. Could stretch schedule to match funding Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Time-line 1st call Money for Prototyping (money in 2008) Buy niobium, cavities, couplers and tuners Manpower Improved second EP line in industry Prepare for clean room bid 2nd call for Infrastructure (money in 2009) Clean room for central facility Trade additional AMTF test stand vs. CMTB Module cryostats Clean room for module integration e.g. at CERN Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Scheme of Cryomodule Production (1st call) Fabrication of cavities Procurement of couplers Pre-treatment of cavities In Industry In Labs Coupler Processing Inspection Final Cavity Preparation Tuners Low-power testing High-power testing Tuner Tests Tank welding BPM Magnet Module Test Module Assembly Cleanroom Cryostat Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018

Summary Synergetic ILC-XFEL scenario shown Allows staging to match funding Assumes new clean room later Location still to be defined Quicker start-up International collaboration Outsourcing of work packages e.g. cavities, couplers etc. Integration at central facility can be matched to funding situation Lutz Lilje DESY -MPY- 19.06.2018
