Unit 1: History of Psychology and Research Methods 1.2 Subfields of Psychology

Basic Research Subfields Aimed at discovering/investigating mental processes and behavior Aimed to increase psych’s knowledge base 1. Biological Psychologists – explore link between physical brain and the mind 2. Developmental Psychologists – study the changes throughout the lifespan (“from womb to tomb”) 3. Cognitive Psychologists – experiment on how we perceive, think, and problem solves

Basic Research Subfields 4. Personality Psychologists – investigate people’s persistent traits 5. Social Psychologists – explore how people influence one another 6. Industrial/Organizational Psychologists – study & advise on workplace behavior

Applied Research Subfields Aimed at solving practical problems 1. Counseling Psychologists – help people with current challenges/life problems (ex. marriage counseling, career guidance) 2. Clinical Psychologists – treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders 3. Psychiatrists – medical doctors who can prescribe medicine in addition to other therapies

Other Specialties Environmental: study the effects of environment on behavior (ex. extreme temperatures, crowds) Consumer: study behavior of shoppers; explain/predict behavior School: help students with disabilities (student focused – helps individual students) Educational: focus on course planning, teaching methods (school system focused – helps all students) Forensic: work in justice system (ex. testify in court, help officers)
