Travel & Tourism Long Haul Destinations

AIMS OF SESSION Discover what factors affect long haul travel Understand why these factors influence the decisions of tourists Research examples of factors affecting long haul travel

P3 Learners must explain in general terms the travel factors that can affect travel to long-haul destinations. You must make sure that you provide examples/evidence for each of the factors that you are describing. You will be given your assignment brief next week.

TIME ZONE! What happened on Saturday night/Sunday morning in terms of time? What time would it have been this time last week? If Dubai is 4 hours ahead of GMT, what time is it there now? If New York is 4 hours behind GMT, what time is it there now?

RECAP TIME ZONES/LENGTH OF FLIGHT/INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE JET LAG DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS/OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS CLIMATE SEASONS

TRAVEL FACTORS – RED INDICATE THOSE WE WILL LOOK AT IN THIS LESSON TIME ZONES/LENGTH OF FLIGHT JET LAG DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS/OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS CLIMATE SEASONS ENTRY REQUIREMENTS VISAS TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS SAFETY HEALTH VACCINATIONS DISEASE OUTBREAKS SOCIAL SITUATIONS CRIME/TERRORISM

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS What does entry requirements mean? Tourists may require various documents including visa and vaccination certificates depending upon which destination they choose to travel to Why might this put people off travelling long haul? They can take time to acquire and therefore will prevent tourists from choosing ‘last minute’ destinations They can also add extra cost to the holiday They might not like injections!

VISA Using the website www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice Research the entry requirements for the following countries:- MEXICO SOUTH AFRICA CHINA NEW ZEALAND

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS These are put in place by the government when it is not wise to visit a destination usually because it is dangerous politically or as a result of disease outbreak. www.fco.gov.uk is the website for the Foreign and Commonwealth office where advice on current restrictions can be found. If tourists have already booked a holiday the tour operator will offer an alternative or a refund.

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS “Burma has suffered from prolonged internal conflicts, involving a number of non-state armed groups from Burma’s ethnic States. Burma has also suffered from periodic bursts of inter- communal tension and violence. This has particularly hit Rakhine State but has also occurred in central Burman areas including Meiktila. The FCO advise against all but essential travel to Rakhine State “

SAFETY – CRIME/TERRORISM The safety of visitors can be due to many different reasons and our most present threat is from terrorist activity. The Foreign office can advise tourists to some extent but do not know where terrorist activity will occur however they may be able to say where it is ‘heightened’. In 2010, Jamaica saw several shootings and tourists were encouraged to stay well away from Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. There are several countries around the globe with a high terror threat and you may choose to research this in your assignment

COUNTRIES WITH RISING TERROR THREATS http://www.cnbc.com/2015/05/25/europe-canada- australia-face-rising-terror-threat-report.html Case Study – highlight key points of the case study to provide examples of where terror is a threat in long haul destinations. Group discussion following five minute reading exercise.

HEALTH Health restrictions normally relate to vaccinations required and sometimes which countries to avoid due to disease breakout for example in 2009 when swine flu put travellers off visiting Mexico. Using the website www.gov.uk again, research vaccination requirements for the following countries:- Cambodia Kenya Thailand China

SOCIAL SITUATIONS Often tourists may decide not to travel to countries for ethical reasons as they would find it hard to enjoy a luxurious holiday whilst others nearby are living in extreme poverty for example in parts of India or The Gambia in Africa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA2atTIGjxA Debate – why do you think people may not want to visit other areas that have social deprivation near to a tourist area?

What have you learned? What factors affect long haul travel? Why do these factors influence the decisions of tourists? Provide examples of factors affecting long haul travel.
