Missing corner – do not look at the picture (leave face down) The purpose is to slow you down as you examine this visual image, looking for details you would not have otherwise noticed Lay your cut out sheet over the image to obscure all but one quarter of the image. In your learning log create 4 corners by drawing a line vertical and horizontal on the page. With your partners list all of the things you notice in the visible quarter of your image in the corresponding quarter of the folded sheet. Do this until all 4 quarters of the image have been examined.

How would you interpret the image now that you have been forced to examine it closely? Be metacognitive about your viewing/answer in your ll What did you see that you think you would not have seen without the missing corner sheet? Which quarter of the image is most important, or are they all equal? Why might the creator have put the information in the specific quarter that he did?

A Street in Paris in May 1871 France was in a state of political upheaval following Franco-Prussian War Workers in Paris set up their own gov’t called Paris Commune, French soldiers quickly stamp out the movement. Most of the Communards are either killed or imprisoned. Is self-government worth dying for? LL What might lead you to join a group seeking self- government? TPS What ideals would you choose to help shape a new government?

Democratic Reform/Activism Urbanization and industrialization brought changes to western nations. Due to these changes people demanded reform. Review: Britain is a constitutional monarchy Monarch is the head of state but parliament has the real power. House of Lords (inherited seats until 1999) and House of Commons. Only 5% could vote to elect members to the house of commons (only men with a substantial amount of land). What is the result? As a result upper classes ran the government. 3 events to change that Democratic Reform/Activism

Reform Bill of 1832 – 1830; Wealthy middle class (bankers, factory owners etc) protested around England in favor of suffrage – right to vote Parliament fearing violence like France passed Reform Bill, eased property requirements so wealthy middle class could vote and gave thriving new industrial cities more representation in parliament Chartist Movement – demands to parliament in a petition called the People's Charter of 1838 Asked for a secret ballot, end to property req. to vote, and pay for parliament. Parliament rejected these ideas Nearly 50 years of petitioning Parliament gave in to the workers demands. Victorian Age – Queen Victoria presided over all these historic changes. Queen at age 18 ruled for 64 years. During this time saw the shift in political power to the parliament and prime minister.

Woman’s Voting and French Democracy By 1900 several industrial countries had universal male suffrage, no country allowed women to vote. Women in GB and the U.S. worked to gain the right to vote. TPS Why did the idea of woman suffrage seem radical in the Victorian Era? Partner Read Emmaline Pankhurst After many wars The Third Republic was finally established as Frances gov’t 1880’s and 90’s Third Republic constantly threatened by monarchists, aristocrats, clergy, army leaders Dreyfus Affair became battleground for these forces, anti- Semitism – prejudice against Jews plays a role as well. Woman’s Voting and French Democracy

1894 Jewish officer Cptn Alfred Dreyfus of French army accused of selling military secrets to Germany. Court found him guilty based on false evidence, sentenced to life in prison. A few years later found out that he was wrongly framed by other officers. Many army leaders, nationalists, leaders in the clergy, and anti- Jewish groups refused to let the case be open in fear that sudden action would cast doubt on the honor of the army. Other defenders of Dreyfus insisted that justice was more important. Eventually French Gov’t declared his innocence. Dreyfus case showed strength of anti-Semitism in Europe. Worse in Eastern Eur. Russia allowed Pogroms (puh-grahms) organized campaigns of violence against Jews. Zionism gains ground, Homeland for the Jews in Palestine. Dreyfus Affair
