GPL Strategic Planning Process 2016

Traditional or Appreciative Strategic Planning Traditional SWOT model of strategic planning Internal Appraisal STRENGTHS Where we can outperform others Weaknesses Where others can outperform us External Appraisal Opportunities What is our preferred future Threats Where are we at risk

SOAR Model Results Aspirations Opportunities Strength What are our resources? What are the measurable results? Aspirations Opportunities What do we aspire to be? Strength What are the opportunities? What are our greatest assets and strengths? What do we need to get there? How will we know we’ve arrived? What is our collective intention? What is our desired future? What are the best things out there for us? What can we do differently? What works here? What do we do well?

Principles of Appreciative Inquiry Constructionist Principle Words create worlds Principle of Simultaneity Inquiry creates change Poetic Principle We can choose what we study Anticipatory Principle Images inspire action Positive Principle Positive questions lead to positive change Wholeness Principle Wholeness brings out the best Enactment Principle Acting “as if” is self-fulfilling Free Choice Principle Free choice liberates power

SOAR Process Inquire Imagine Innovate Inspire Co-create purpose and values Analyse the environment with staff and partners SOAR Inquiry Inquire Generate long term initiatives Generate Alternatives and Recommendations Imagine Develop short term objectives Develop tactical and functional plans and integrated programs Innovate Implement Measure and celebrate success Continuously improve Inspire

Steps in the Process Bring together a design team Design the Inquiry Summit Where, when, who? What questions will we focus on in the inquiry? How will we record the data? How will we use the input Facilitate the summit Use the priorities, ideas, recommendations and opportunities generated at the summit to create the strategic initiatives and overarching implementation plan Get feedback from staff and partners Finalize the strategic plan

Typical Ai questions Tell me about your beginnings at GPL, what initially brought you to work here? When you’re at your best, what do you feel you bring to your colleagues and residents of GPL? What would they miss out on if you weren’t here? Think back to a situation or a time when you felt really proud of being of being here at the GPL, either because you were proud of your contribution or how people were treated or anything else that may have produced that sense of pride…Tell me the whole story… What was happening? What made it a peak experience for you? What were you contributing? What were others contributing? What is the one thing that gives life an energy to the people at the GPL, the one thing that if it was lost would lead you to question if you would stay or move on. Imagine you’ve been away from the GPL for 5 years, with no contact at all. Imagine now that when you walk through the doors five years later, the GPL has become everything you hopes it could be. Describe to me what would be happening? What will have changed? What will have remained the same? If I gave you a magic wand and granted you three wishes that you could use to help the GPL become home you hope it could be, what would those 3 wishes be? What are some things that could be done within the next 12 months to help the GPL head in the direction you’re dreaming of?

What supportive equipment and materials do we need? Who will be the point person for logistics? Focus of the interviews What are the questions we need to ask? How shall we deal with the physical data? (flip chart sheets, etc.) Besides staff, are there any other stakeholders we should be talking to? Communication What do we need to tell staff? By when?
