Presentation transcript:

This term refers to any type of graphic display that is used to convey information to people. There are many different types of signage, with most relying on words and often in conjunction with images. Today most signage relies just on images and very little to no words.

Custom-made signage - These can be made of wood, neon, vinyl, or metal and are generally designed for a business. They are used to convey the address and name of the business. They can also be used to promote a specific product or service that the business offers. It can be something as simple as a hand-written sign to something that was put together by a large marketing company. This type of signage can come in a variety of shapes and sizes from postcards to billboards.   With this type of signage it will often include the name of the business but to be most effective it will have some type of element that is an iconic symbol or sign for that business. For example, McDonald’s name is well recognized but it is more famous for the Golden Arches, which in many instances is a symbol that is in the front of the restaurant or somewhere visible that can be seen from a great distance. If you are traveling on a highway often the signs advertising the restaurants found off an exit of the highway will say McDonald’s but what most people will find themselves looking for the big golden arches you can usually see from the highway.

Street signage - These types of signage give information to both drivers and pedestrians. Street signage will give you the name of the street and is often white lettering on a green background. They generally give you the name of the street you are on and the cross streets as you come to them. Some may even have an arrow showing if it is a one-way street. Because they give information to drivers and pedestrians they focus on being very legible and easy to read.

Instructional and hazard signage - This type of signage will need to be seen and easily recognized from a distance by drivers. It also needs to be comprehensive to any driver, even those that do not speak the native language. They will generally have some type of infographic or design theme that may be accompanied by words. Another sign that needs to be recognized from a distance is the stop sign. The unique octagonal shape and red color makes it recognizable even in conditions that offer poor visibility. For example, if there is a sign needed to indicate to drivers that sporadically deer may be crossing the road the signage may simply show a picture of a deer.
