Legal and Ethical Dilemmas Abortion Termination of a pregnancy Spontaneous- A miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy Induced- a procedure that is done to end a pregnancy. Most induced abortions are done in the 1st 12 weeks of pregnancy. Test will be done to confirm pregnancy and a counselor is available to answer any questions. Possible ethical issues/topics for discussion on abortion: Comparative rights – does the fetus have the same rights to life as the mom has to determine her future? Question of personhood – when does a baby’s personhood begin? At conception or the day of birth? Sanctity of human life – do we believe that all human life is sacred, and, thus, that the direct and intentional taking of an innocent human life is a proper act? Abortion from a utilitarian perspective: The question is not can the fetus reason or talk, but can they suffer?

Although abortion is legal there are still ethical issues that arise… Abortion is legal. The Supreme Court's ruling in Roe v. Wade (1973) established that the right to have an abortion is protected by the U.S. Constitution, which means that states are prohibited from banning abortions performed prior to the point of viability. Roe originally established viability at 24 weeks; Casey v. Planned Parenthood (1992) shortened it to 22 weeks. Although abortion is legal there are still ethical issues that arise…
