Sophomore Persuasive Speech

Assignment You will be giving an 8 minute Persuasive Speech. This speech is persuasive, which means you are trying to convince your audience of something or trying to make them agree with you. This will involve choosing a controversial topic from the world today, choosing a side, and arguing why that side is correct.

Choosing a Topic Choosing a controversial topic is the most important part of this speech. Your topic must be cleared by me before you begin. Once you choose a topic, you must choose which side you are going to argue/prove. For example: TOPIC: Sale of soda in elementary schools. ASK YOURSELF: Should elementary schools be permitted to sell soda to students? TAKE A SIDE: No, elementary schools should be prohibited from selling soda to students.

Once you have a topic… Once you have had your topic approved by me, it is time to do your research. You must research to find three strong, cogent points that prove your argument. You will need to create a Works Cited slide, so keep track of the sources that you use.

Once you have your topic and your 3 arguments… You will need one visual aid to go along with each argument you develop. Avoid using photos as visual aids. Graphs, charts, statistics, and quotes are preferable. You will refer to and talk about each of these visual aids in your speech. They must help to PROVE your arguments.

Once you have your topic, your three arguments, and your visual aids… Once you have all of this necessary information, you are ready to write your speech.

Writing your speech Your speech must start with a introduction that clearly conveys the topic you have chosen and your stance on the topic You will then go into your arguments, presenting them one at a time. Your arguments must be fully developed with as much convincing information as possible. You will use your visual aids during this part of the speech. The speech must have a clear conclusion that recaps your major points and brings the speech to a close.

Other Information Must be 8 minutes long Must be logical and organized Must be convincing! Must have 3 visual aids (one supporting each argument) Must have a title slide and a Works Cited slide
