Selected Topics from Philippians 12/2/12 Heanenly Citz 2 R. Henderson

Topic 3 Heavenly Citizenship 2 Verses in Philippians Verses in other New Testament books

Heavenly citizenship in Philippians (review) Philippians 1:27, “..conduct yourselves..” Gk politeuōmai conduct yourselves - politeuma - to live or conduct yourself as a citizen (politēs) (Wuest) --- see to it that you recognize your responsibility as citizens (of heaven) Philippians 3:20, “..citizenship is in heaven..” Gk politeuma is - exits or has its fixed location from which (or out from where) also we eagerly wait (or expect eagerly) for a Savior

Heavenly citizenship in Ephesians Ephesians 1:19b-20 These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, Ephesians 2:4-6 But God, --- made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, What does it mean to be seated ? When were we “raised up” and “seated” with Christ ? What are two important aspects of our seating ?

Heavenly citizenship in Ephesians Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, What kinds of blessings are spoken of here ? How many spiritual blessings are we receiving ? Where is the location of our spiritual blessings ? Why are these spiritual blessings in Christ ? How should this verse change our prayer life ?

Heavenly citizenship in other verses Colossians 1:3-5 We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel How certain is this hope ? What does “laid up” imply ? Why is it important that this “hope be in heaven ? How can we have love for all the saints ?

Heavenly citizenship in other verses 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, 10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come. What two aspects of the believer's life are mentioned above ? How does the “wait” in verse above compare with “eagerly wait” of Phil. 3:20 ? Why is it important to know that we will be rescued from the wrath to come ?

Heavenly citizenship in other verses 2 Timothy 4:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Wuest) 18 The Lord will draw me to himself away from every pernicious work actively opposed to that which is good, and will keep me safe and sound for His kingdom, the heavenly one, to whom be the glory forever and forever. Amen How does the Lord rescue me from every evil deed ? When will He bring me to His heavenly kingdom ? Why is it important to know the Lord will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom ?
